Carrera S no LSD??? Comparison question inside!
Carrera S no LSD??? Comparison question inside!
All,
I'm almost in the final steps of acquiring my first Porsche (a 997.2 C2S), and upon doing much research, I've just learned that these cars do not come equipped with an LSD as a standard option. I read all about the SPASM (P17) and 220 (single LSD) options, neither of which are very common based on what I've seen.
I'm not going to let the news rain on my parade, however, I do admit to being slightly disappointed, as I was always under the impression that Porsche would never deprive a sports car of something as crucial as an LSD.
I've gotten to test drive quite a few C2S's, and I've been impressed by all, but none of the test drives have taken place on a track; the question becomes: how does the performance of a non-LSD Porsche compare to the performance of other relevant sports cars that come equipped with an LSD? (ex: e9x M3) I rarely go to a track, but have owned quite a few cars that came equipped with LSD's so I became used to what an LSD has to offer, specially when cornering.
I realize that the answers to this question may be on the subjective side, but I'd like to hear what the community has to say.
Thank you!

I've almost given up on the idea of the LSD on a used 911.
I got my 09 CS last year and went thru the same thing. Surprise, disappointment and then after One year I realized what the dealer told me "The car really doesn t need it" and something about how LSD hampers the cars handling was true. I haven t tracked my car either but can say this car handles better than any other car that I ve had that had LSD.

Don't forget, we are talking about a rear engine car here too with the 911. Makes a world of difference in many ways.
Well consider a Corvette, it s got LSD and doesn t have anything in handling over the 911 (IMO).

And yes, the added weight over the rear tires is a game changer, I'm just concerned about the way the car behaves when it loses traction or comes out of a corner.
Which vette? A c6? A c6 z06? I'm just trying to compare to other cars of similar value and purpose. Personally, I dislike vettes with a passion, therefore I'm not sticking for the car, but based on reviews I hear that they handle amazing, even for having leaf springs in the rear. E92 M3 is also another competitor with an LSD. Just wondering if anyone has made a direct comparison between all these cars.

.I m sure all the vets and M3 s are good cars too in which it comes down to a feel for each car. My choice was Z06 or 911. Having several MB s I prefer the German engineering and feel and quality. If it s not a track car why worry about fractions of a second? That can be overcome by skill anyway.
Since I don't have to endure snow, I prefer the c2s over the c4s, but we all agree that the wider body is indeed sexier. Also, the c4s comes with an LSD regardless, which I found out recently.
If this car ends up not being what I want, I'll send Jarrod a shout out
Find one of the latest Road and Track magazine with the Porsche cayman (yellow) possibly on the cover and read the winter road test story.... it s amazing what these cars can do with no LSD and the right tires.
Yes sir, will do!
Simple solution....search for the best car you can find......then if it does not have LSD...... retrofit it!!
