Hi,

had my first track day with the (new to me) car In Thunderhill (today's rained out). AMbient temp was around 80 and I noticed that the oil temp went up to 275. The water temp weny up only slightly.

This is a 2009 C4S with PDK,
Should I be worried (there will be 105 degrees track days coming)?
Install 3rd radiator?

Thanks

Install that extra radiator ....
Ignore your water temps , as its a dummy gauge .

A friend with the same car combo added a third radiator and the problem went away. At 105F ambient I would still keep an eye on the gauge. You might also consider another oil. However, that will open quite a bit of discussion.

The oil cooler is really a heat exchanger with oil on the tube side and water on the jacket side (ie, no exposure to air). This means that the oil is being cooled by the >175F water which doesn't sound good but the heat transfer is much better than the old air cooled style.

Yes, if it doesn't already have it. Someone with PDK can confirm but it might have been model year 2010 when they became standard and the reason was to handle the heat load from the tranny fluid.

Edit: On a cold start-up, I've always wondered whether the water heats up quicker than the oil. If so, then it'll transfer heat to the oil which will allow it to warm up quicker.

ECS Tuning sells the third radiator kit. Give them a try if you can't wait. http://www.ecstuning.com/Porsche-2 t...ngine/Cooling/

Installed the 3rd radiator kit and the oil temp on the track (yesterday) only went up to 250 degrees :-) Mission accomplished!

Does anyone know that 275 degree oil temp can actually be harmful to Porsche engines?

Not on my car
I believe Porsche put the 3rd radiator back in with the 2010 or 2011 model year, mine is a 2009

It was on the 2011 that the 3rd rad became standard. Have a 2010. Missed it by a year, but the third rad is cheap to install.
