997 Navigation option?
First I want to say that it’s a nightmare to order a car from the Honolulu Porsche dealership; long story short-- I put down a deposit as they "required" (for a 2006 997) and after working out all the options and assuming the vehicle will come equipped with all the options that I’ve chosen….
Now (after more than a month) my salesman tells me because I was out of town and couldn't be reached, so the management took few options out to keep the cost of the vehicle down so that in case IF I decides not to buy the car then they would have better chance at resale! And then they assure me that these options (Navigation system, Carbon Package and Multi Function Steering wheel) can be installed at the dealership after the car arrives, should I believe them? What’s the difference between having these options installed by the factory and dealership??
Anyway, I need some feedback on the navigation system from all you out there! I’ve hear that Porsche’s navigation system is not worth the money? Is that true?? Anyone with a 2005 model navigation system out there?.... HELP.
(it really sucks that in Hawaii there’s only one Porsche dealership, they monopolized this market with a real snobbish attitude! )

Couldn't have agree with you more!
Here's what they order for me; or the car that they think I "should" buy...
2006 Carrers S Cabriolet $91,400.00
Slate grey metallic $3,070.00
Natural Grey Leather $4,875.00
Power Seat Pkg. $1,550.00
Self Dimming Mirr. $385.00
Tiptronic S $3,420.00
Park Assist Sys. $530.00
Bose Sound Pkg. $1,390.00
========================
total with Destination Charge $107,415.00
for the options that they left out it was going to be an additional $4,320.00 which is not very much compare to the total $$$ of the car! Crazy isn't it??!!!

Unbelievable.
BTW, on the NAV issue, the NAV system in my Mercedes is pretty good, my guess is that the Porsche system is probably similar (I have use it very briefly in a Cayenne) in that it is not touch screen nor does it accept voice commands but I believe it is DVD based, I'm sure there will be some kind of surcharge for the mapping of Hawaii to. Its a nice tool and it looks cool but you get the PCM screen either way. I am ordering it on my S coupe but arguably don't need it or won't use it much and they don't add much if anything at resale.
My take on NAV is I kind of dig watching the map but don't really use it much at all to actually find places, in fact when I did input an address last week it got lost. The one on my wife's 745Li is a bad joke although it was standard. If they have one at the dealer, maybe in a Cayenne go check it out although most of the guys I have run across really can't use them or explain them properly.
Bottom line, and my .02 which is contrary to your dealer is whats another 2k on a 100K car??

...I was really angry & stressed out over this matter, but in hindsight this gives me an oppertunity to buy the car from a mainland dealer; recommendations anyone?? for a westcoast Porsche dealer???
BTW (05997S) good suggestion, may be the Cayenne's navi. will give me some idea of how Porsche Navi. works, IF its the same system as the 997; I have a Nav-system on my MBZ E500 and in Hawaii its really not necessary but as you said... what's 2k more on a 80k car! and it does come in handy at times.... thanks for the reply.

They really can't confiscate your deposit at all unless you sign off on it as a partial payment. If you think about it, they don't give you anything of value in exchange for your deposit which is necessary to create a contract. It also allows them to order the car anyway they want without any repercussions from you.
I use the NAV in my 997s every day - I am lost without it. You should make sure they cover Hawaii well before you commit though. I have driven to parts of MD and DC that have not been covered and I have been lost. If the area is covered I believe the NAV does quite well...
Why do you need a Nav in Oahu?
I don't think the OEM NAV iworth $2000. Get a Garmin C320. It's less than $500 on the internet. Great system. It's very easy to use and portable. You can use on any car even when you travel on a rental car.

I just like the pretty map. I admit I bought it on my Benz and will add it to the Porsche 90% because I think it looks cool and 10% for functionality. OTOH am buying the car based on 90% function and 10% form.

I'd see if they can correct your order. If not, screw them and get one shipped from LA area. Get the nav just for resale alone. Who buys a 100k car without nav these days? Even F car have nav now!
