Brake pads

Im pretty sure my 2005 Carrera S is due for brakes...Can anyone suggest where to get quality pads without going to the dealership? Also can I get away with just doing the pads or do I have to do the rotors also?I was told porsche rotors cant be cut. I would gladly appreciate any help . thanks

if you can feel a lip on the rotor, I've been told you should just change it out.

I am looking for a pad with great bite, little fade, and little to no dusting. any suggestions?

The rotors should have a minimum thickness stamped on them. Like 26.0mm Front and 22.0mm Rear. You can easily measure the current rotor thickness using a digital vernier caliper (~$10 at Harbor Freight or ebay).

As for pads, many people use an OEM replacement like Textar. I'm using Hawk HPS+ and I like them but I can't say that they are significantly better. Several 6Speed sponsors sell pads and rotors, such as Pelican, ESC Tuning, and AWE Tuning.

I would buy OEM from suncoast and be done with it.

I will be going that route shortly.

In addition to Textar, we also offer Genuine Porsche. Both are great for street and some track but if you're spending the majority of time on the street then go with Genuine Porsche or Textar.

Did the fronts on my Cayman yesterday, using OEM pads. When I asked awhile back, I was told that a small lip is OK, provided the remaining rotor thickness away from the lip exceeds spec and there is no cracking between the cross-drilled holes. I think I had a 0.2mm lip on each side, which left ~80% of the rotor thickness remaining.

It was an easy DIY, but I did run into one problem. There is a sheet metal backing to the pad, and on one of my pads this backing plate was misaligned in a way that prevented the pad from inserting all the way into the caliper. I was able to file away the corner of the backing plate, and problem solved.

Probably not a common occurrence, but something to look for if you can't get the retaining pin to line up with the holes in the pads when you put it all back together.

pelican parts. no need to change rotors unless there is a lip (i.e. worn) or excessive cracking.

The problem is most places either no longer turn rotors or are afraid to touch drilled/slotted rotors. And most repair shops would rather just replace the rotors for both brake job simplicity and to get the extra dollars from installing new parts.

But Porsche rotors can be turned if there is enough thickness left to them and there are no cracks connecting the drilled holes. This is a much cheaper route than new rotors in this case.

I took mine to a local speed shop where they specifically advertise turning drilled rotors. The rotors came back flat, no more lip and well within thickness specs, all for $20 per rotor.
