997.2 vs. 991
997.2 vs. 991
I am either getting myself a new Cayman S or a slightly used 911. Budget is $70k, which is workable for lightly optioned new CS and for many, many 997.2 cars. Is it worth stretching for a 991? I know what they would say on that board, but I'm curious what y'all think.
it really doesn't matter what we think.
go test drive a 991, 997.2 and a CS and u can decide what's worth it for you.
who knows, u may fall in love with the 991.. or not.
my 2 cents FWIW: i would look for a 997.2S or GTS since the price difference between a well-optioned 991S and a used 997.2S can be substantial.

LOL. I guess in the same way that on a 981 Forum I would expect the opposite point of view, it isn't surprising that you feel that way.
How long do you plan on keeping the car? If not for more than 2-3 years, I'd jump in a 997.2 S and enjoy the hell out of it, then get into 991 S when their prices come down. That is my plan, and after a few weeks of owning my 997.2 (non-s), I LOVE everything about it (especially after adding the Tubi exhaust
). Good luck

I did the side by side comparison and price was not an overwhelming concern. I ended up with the 2012 997-2 Carrera S 6 speed. The 991 may appeal to a lot of folks but I wanted more of a driver's car and a little less of a touring car. The 3 things that bothered me about the 991 we're: the console, the steering and the 7 speed. I liked everything else just fine.
The best advice is drive them both-you'll know which one is for you.

I say wait until you can buy a used 991 with some good options for 70-80K. No way you should buy a Cayman on that budget, unless you have a crash on Caymans, which it does not sound like.
For as much I like my 997, we will start seeing more and more 991's around. I would not want to spend 70-80K to have a car that is going to be soon look outdated.
If you buy a 997, on that budget, you should only consider turbos.
Ultimately, as someone said, drive them all, then decide.

I bought a new 2012 997.2 S CAP in Nov of 2011. I could of waited 3 months or so and got a 991. My car is fully loaded and I saved 25k over a 991. Yes the 991 is a newer design. I drove one for two day at the Porsche driving school at Brimingham. Is the 991 better yes but not so much that I'm in a big hurry to get one. The differences are sutle in my opinion.
My car has been absolutely perfect with no issues. I insulted the dealer by telling them I was so happy it was like owning a Toyota. BTW I run the sh-t out of my cars. Had my 996 for 12 years. I like the shorter turning radius of the 997. 991 will be better when they add the rear wheel steering that is on GT3.

I personally would look for a used 997.2 GTS or GT3, but a nice used 991 shouldn't be over looked. I wouldn't rule out the Cayman either. But I'm just a 911 kind of guy, so as nice to drive as the Cayman is, for me it would have to be a 911.
At this point, at least depending on how large the market is where you're located, a good selection of 991s that could be near your price range. No doubt, in my opinion, there are quite a few differences between the 997 & 991. And I don't think the changes, most notably the electric steering over hydraulic, would justify negating the 991; I think they are good changes, for the most part.
Thanks all. I hope to keep whatever P car I get for quite a while. I currently drive a 2004 M3 that I have had for seven years. Will see what I think after the test drive today.
