Cracked windshield! What to do?

I know it was inevitable. Didn't expect it to be this soon though. Only 4500 miles. Oh well. So what's next guys? I am trying to convince myself to avoid a total windshield replacement because of the obvious reasons such as: not breaking the factory seal, quality of re-seal is a hit and miss, scratches to paint during windshield removal (the tools they use looks brutal). Every windshield replacement I have seen always leaks. This thought scares the **** out of me. The crack is about 6 inches long. Starting from the top edge of the windshield right above the rear view mirror extending down to the mounting point of the mirror. Safelite already came out once to seal it but to my surprise they didn't drill in front of the crack to make a bullseye to stop the spread. Took it out for a test drive and it extended another inch. They will be back on Monday but wanted to hear from the forum before they show up. Maybe they will do the bullseye this time. We'll see. Thoughts? Am I SOL? TIA

I'd be surprised if the dealer did such work in-house. I checked with my dealer to see about glass replacement just in case I ever needed it. They have a favorite installer that takes care of all their glass needs.

Dime size crack earned me a new windshield paid for by USAA. My dealer farms all glass work out to Safelite so that's where I went. First class job without exception. No leaks, no scratches and no trace of it ever being done. Your worries are unwarranted based on my experience.

I've had 2 windshields replaced by Safelite and both were top-notch jobs that stood the test of time. I wouldn't worry about it

I had more than 3 replaced also, never on the Porsche but two on Mercedes Benzes... Just had safelite do one this summer also. Never had a leak. You do have to impress on them to be careful and scratches will not be accepted . I believe that A dealer only farms it out anyway. It funny that when safelite was here doing one of my cars I told him I was glad it wasn t the Porsche.... He laughed and said that they do them too . If you get a good tech it won t be an issue.

Agreed! When it comes to that, it will definitely be done right. Next phone call will be to insurance.

I believe you are correct. Most dealers subcontract this type of work. I like the idea of having the dealer on the hook if something goes awry so I am thinking just do it through the dealer knowing that they subcontract anyways.
If someone thinks otherwise please let me know.

I have Geico. Hope they are as loose. Thanks for sharing. Lots of positives for Safelite. Feeling better.

Thanks! Good to know. Safelite appears to be the way to go.

I had the rear glass changed (due to heating element issues-damaged by person who took off the tint foil)
The dealer has a P certified bodyshop and they did it there.

Did you had it done through the dealer or went directly to the body shop?

I could have done both, but I wanted it billed/written up through service dept not body shop.
Buyers get freaked out whenever there is "body shop" on anything!

So Safelite came again and they just fill the "new" section with more resin. No drilling.
Took it out for a quick couple of miles spin and it didn't spread. Pretty sure that wasn't enough testing but I was short on time. Will do more testing in the next several days. I think at this point it's not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" I will swap out the glass. Spoke with the Safelite tech and he informed me that they don't use the cold knife on these cars but use a wire method instead to break the seal. Sounds like a much safer method from what I understood.

Scottsdale Porsche did mine and did a great job. OEM windshield paid for by my ins co. Ins wanted to send Safelight, said no way I will have that done in the parking lot. They agreed, like new!

Not sure about Scottsdale or any other town for that matter but Safelite has their own shop in my home town in addition to mobile units. That's where I had it done. Spent about an hour in a typical customer lounge with TV and magazines and then went on my way. Very painless and the bragging by the tech who was doing the surgery was comforting too: "I've done dozens of these. Piece of cake compared to others". I think he said 300ZX's are among the worst.

Another Safelite install here. I asked them to use factory glass rather than their standard glass. Had to get it okayed by my insurance company, but they did, and everything is perfect. Installer did the work in my driveway and he was very nervous to work on the car (in a good way). Took his time and was meticulous.
