Short throw
You should get a number of response here.
I asked a local Indy shop and race car owner his opinion and he said get the 997.2 OEM GT3 shifter. Sonnen has them on sale less than $400 shipped, on the front page of their site. It's not as short a throw, which is fine, I was just looking for more precise shifts and less la la land when trying to downshift. I'll get it installed in a week or so and report back. Crazy thing is you can pay $600 for a stupid carbon fiber surround for the sport chrono pod and $400 for a complete OEM shifter assembly. :-)

I had the b&m short throw shifter installed about a year ago. It's great. You'll love it. No more notchy than my stock shifter was. I don't understand why it didn't come from the factory this way. Rifle bolt my friend.

We've done a gazillion over the years. Nice improvement for sure....
The factory OEM one is the most stock like if that's what you're after.
I much prefer the adjustable Numeric ones though.

The other nice thing with this and/or the numeric is you don't "break" the factory one out and probably save money/time on install too. Plus you can always go back to stock if need be.
I wouldn't change anything else out in the 997- no. Find the one you like.. I guess that's the other nice thing is that there are three levels / settings on ones like the numeric.
I personally prefer the B&M to the OEM shifter (billet aluminum > plastic, IMHO), and I don't know what you mean by "break out" the factory shifter if you're going aftermarket. Even if you're replacing it with the OEM GT3 SSK, you're still going to have to break out the plastic tabs that hold the original shifter in place. Get the B&M, you won't regret it.
