Trickle Charger - When Do You Need One?
Trickle Charger - When Do You Need One?
I just purchased a 2007 911. I plan on driving it 1-2 times per week, the remainder of time it will sit in garage. I have been told by some that I should get a Porsche trickle charger.
Thoughs or feedback?
Thanks!

Did a quick search and found this thread that might help https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...aintainer.html
I personally think that if you are driving on a weekly basis then you probably don't need one. I think if you are storing the car for a longer period of time then it would be necessary. But see if there is any additional info in that thread.

I will be storing a 997.2 GTS for 2-3 months. I bought the Noco Genius 3500.

Porsche Trickle Charger
Have used the Porsche trickle charger on my Boxster S for past 4 winters, no problems, battery is 4 1/2 yrs old, still strong. Winters are 4 months long here in Western Md, Boxster starts up on first crank in the Spring.
I use one in the Winter when their is Salt/Sand on the Ground, I will not drive in that condition. I do not leave it on, I put it on one day a week and then switch it to my Shelby another day, then I do it again another week later.
Buy the C-Tek, they make the Porsche one, I love mine. Buy the Cigarette Lighter Option as well, the Center Console lighter can be used, I put it through my sunroof that I leave cracked open.

If you are going to store for a long period like a month or more you want a battery maintainer not a trickle charger. If you drive your car once or twice a week for at least a 20 min trip you should not need to do anything. If you thing you need something make sure you get a maintainer. This works like a trickle charger but backs off to near zero to maintain.
It can be left on indefinalty with out damage. The Porsche charger is this type there are many others on the market.

Just get the C-Tek unit mentioned above. It is the one Porsche "overcharges" for. Pun intended. It is programmed not just to keep battery charged but to prolong battery life under all conditions and plugs into cigarette lighter, again as mentioned. Amazon sells it. Used to come with the lighter adaptor but check.
I rebelled against buying a charger for years with my 997 turbo . I felt that I ought to drive the car more and if I bought one I would let it sit.
Usually the low battery would give a warning like weakened startup . I would take it to the dealership and they would charge the car up for me overnight . They have a much stronger charger than the trickle charge . One or two batteries went bad but i caught it in time to barely start the car .
Finally I got the "overpriced" Porsche unit mentioned by others and voila .. battery is great all the time. i just come home and plug it just in case I dont drive the car for awhile.
It only took me about 6 years to get one though .

i bought a ctek with cigarett lighter adapter on ebay for $79.00 so I could change my battery without losing settings. We recently purchased an '08 C4 and it seemed sluggish starting. Asked dealer if that was typical for Porsche (our 1st porsche). Never got a concrete answer so just to feel comfortable i replaced it. Before replacing the battery I put the Ctek on it and it took 15 hours to fully charge. The new Duralast cranks it twice as fast. I like the peace of mind knowing how old the battery is. Most batteries nowadays give no warning when they die. Start perfectly one time and nothing the next.
I just got back from the dealer - I bought the one there for $60.
I used to have an old 1970 Challenger and occassionally it would need a charge. For $60 I think it's good insurance. It's plugged it in to the lighter between the seats right now.
Thanks!

If you drive it very short distances only very occasionally, or store the car undriven for a long time (several months) then you need a trickle charger.
If you decide you need to get one, we offer both of the Porsche models, but the charger can also act like the maintainer if need be. For more information Click Here.
