The 911 always brings incrementally better performace with each new generation. I think that Porsche understands that the folks who will be buying ( or leasing) 911s over the next several years might be a somewhat different group than in the past.

No doubt...997 GT3 cars already are holding value where they're at. And agree, they may be unobtainable at reasonable prices some day. Cannot go wrong with a buy and hold on a GT3. If I could get behind the wheel of one in the next year and see if it's something I would want, I would sure like have a GT3 as my "keeper".

I still don't know WHY Porsche would just not offer a MT in those cars?? I mean it's LESS technology than the PDK...what's the big deal about just offering it?? Are the drivetrains that different that it throws off production or development? If customers WANT the cars why not make them?? This is where I go back to thinking Porsche will no doubt release a "drivers edition" or something along that line, in the GT3 a manual.

I for one would be bored as hell driving a PDK for my weekend car.

Actually, the 7 speed manual trans in the new 911 is actually the PDK fitted with a manual gear selector and a traditional clutch. It is not a 7 speed version of the previous Aisin 6 speed trans. Apparently it is only the American market that insists on the MT. The new Boxster actually offers a traditional manual if that's chosen.
