How hard is it to replace starter cable?

Just discovered that I need to replace my starter cable for my 2006 Porsche Carrera. Thus, how difficult is it to DIY for average mechanically inclined person? Much obliged.

Did you happen to call a couple dealers? Since there is a TSB on this will they do it even out of warranty?

Have you done search here and elsewhere. There was a diy I recall. Not an easy job.

It's doable. I'll be doing this soon too when I perform my 80,000 mile maintenance.

I was not aware of any starter cable TSB. I guess I have to give my dealership a call tomorrow morning. Thank you.

I couldn't find a TSB on this anywhere. Where did you find it?

Sorry for the delay in responding. My receipt shows 38786 "faulty starter system power cable". My '06 is CPO'ed and was done Sept '13. Not sure if they will cover it out of warranty, but no hurt in asking. Good luck.

My question is: since it is a difficult task to replace the cable, can the cable be "threaded" in a different path just to make the job easier ? Maybe , threaded "as the crow flies" and more direct maybe?

No. All the effort is expended getting to the starter motor attachment point and you stillhave to pull the alternator to get to that attachment point. Having a longer harness wouldn't help. Job is doable if you take your time and have a well stocked tool box and jack stands. Extra pair of hands isn't necessary but helpful. .

I was going to try it

I found the DIY for the job and decided it was too much of a PITA. My indy did it for parts and 2 hours labor. Money well spent, and my car starts like new.

My indy recommended that I go ahead and replace the starter while he had it off, it wasn't making any weird sounds but he said he had seen enough of them that it would be recommended, so I did. My Porsche buddies swear that he is a straight up guy.

Starter = $300
Cable - $125
Labor - $225

Total - $650...would have been $350 without a new starter.
