Spacers! To do or not to do.....

Seems that paying over $400 just to have my wheels a few millimeter wider apart does not seem logical, however I see a lot of people do this mod, since I drive my car fairly gentle I am not really concerned about improved handling, I would like however to have a more aggressive stance on my car since it's the narrow body, what do you guys think? Is it worth it? I have a 997s cab so it kind of looks even narrower than the regular 911 coupe, thoughts??

I wouldnt. if the wheels needed to be further out, Porsche would have done it that way...

$400 is just plan silly talk I personally like the look, a lot of people tend to go for 7mm in the front and 15mm in the rear. It all depends the look you want to go for though. We offer a range of spacers available for your C2s. For more information Click Here.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I will gladly answer them.

Here is a picture with 3mm in the front and 12mm in the rear.

I'd argue that its not as much having the track actually wider, that's hard to perceive just like you state... it's more that they appear wider because they are are more flush with the outer fender and less tucked into the wheel well. This is mentally associated with a race-car kind of look. The tucked-in look is a more conservative look that people naturally associate with conventional cars, especially sedans.

To me this is more of a perception thing at the subconscious level. If you stand behind the car and try to consciously look for it, it doesn't work. If you look at the car as a whole, it just seems to work better for me with the spacers.

That's it for my zen moment of the day.

And that is a reasonable take on it. However, most European countries and the U.S. have manufacturing regulations that require a certain degree of inset of the tires from the fenders. I would guess that is why Porsche itself sells its own 5mm spacers, it almost seems that they even think the wheels would be better outset a little more.

That said, I've found no substantial arguments that the car drives any better or worse with the sizes of spacer we are talking about. For most I believe it is simply a visual preference. I tried before and after cornering tests in the same safe location and conditions at the limits and could perceive no change (I was curious and didn't want to do anything that compromised handling). Of course I'm don't track my car or pretend to have the senses of a pro, but if there is a change, it's extremely minor.

(Oh, and if you do decide to do this, be sure to get the proper longer bolts).

I could be wrong but seem to remember reading the inset is required in the U.S. to allow for snow chains to be fitted (which I imagine very, very few Porsches would ever see). I also agree with fellow posters that it's a visual rather than performance issue; I much prefer the wheels being spaced out a little bit -- looks cleaner and more aggressive.

3mm equals 0.1181 inches. That is less than an 1/8 of an inch. Across the front track, the car wheels are 0.2362 further out - less than a 1/4 of an inch. 12mm equals 0.4724 inch - less than 1/2 inch. So, on the rear track the wheels are .9448 further out - less than an inch. In the photos posted by ESC Tuning, I can't notice any difference on the front wheels and an ever so slight increase for the rear.

I have to assume that people make this mod because they know it is there and like the idea. I suspect that 99.9% of people will ever notice the difference. I also am guessing that tire width can have the same effect. My 2006 C4S has a wide track already. I think to make a difference, the spacers would have to be increased, particularly in front.

And if the M96/97 motors needed a lubricated IMS bearing Porsche would have done that too. Thankfully it isn't needed

Our cars are toys, so if you feel so just go with it, I got front and rear spacers from suncoast, pretty nice looking and perfect fitting.

A simple mod as simple as wheel spacers totally transform the look of the car.
