2011 Targa 4s or 2013 Boxster S
Hi All,
I recently purchased a 2013 Boxster S. I do really enjoy the car but I have always wanted a 911. I had an order placed for a 991 but decided to hold off on that car for a few more years. However, I have been considering switching into a 2011 997.2 Targa 4s. I was wondering if anyone had any experience driving both these cars? Am I was being foolish and will I miss the refinement/luxury of the 981?
I do enjoy the top down rides but it is not something I need in my life at all. And for just driving around town I have found the Boxster to be quite loud, though I am not sure if the 997.2 will be any quieter (both engine/tire noise)? I drive the 981 mostly on weekends with the occasional weekly drive if the weather is too nice to pass up and would probably be doing the same with the 997.2. Any insight would be most appreciated/helpful.
Thanks guys!

Sorry, driven a Cayman S, not a Boxster S, so I can only give a qualified response.
I think it depends on what you're looking for. I love my Targa 4S. It's quiet enough and is a great combination of GT for weekend trips with just my wife and I, and for a ripping drive on Sunday mornings on the twisties to breakfast at Alice's. It's my 5th 911 and is a total keeper. I'm not sure how quiet it is...never really thought about it. With Michelin Super Sports, the ride is a little rough, but i'm in.
I'm not the least bit interested in the 991 Targa - not that I think it's a bad car, it's just not for me. Seems like sports cars are generally trending toward more competent, more convenient, more heavy, less personal, less exciting. The 997.2 is as far as I want that to go.
The last generation Cayman S that I drove would have been better as a sunday morning twisty car, was a little more exciting for me, but was less well rounded. Plus, I LOVE the glass roof Targa feeling (obviously).
Good luck.

Best reviewer's quote I've seen of the Boxster: "With both a front (frunk) and rear trunk, now you have TWO places where a golf bag won't fit."

The rear seats of the 997.2, folded down of course, provide a nice long space for, say, two overnight bags or something longer such as my daughter's viola. Or, say, a golf bag!

if u always wanted a 911, get a 911.
if u want refinement/luxury, get a 991.
LOL!
I am not at all surprised by the responses. I posted a thread over at the Boxster section too but no replies yet. I honestly was not expecting to get much support for the Boxster here (though as mentioned I am a big fan myself). Anyways, I do appreciate everyone that took the time to comment (in one way or the other). I am taking the Targa for a drive this weekend and we will see what happens.
Thanks again!

Enjoy. Either way you go it's not as though you'll be suffering.
My wife and I have had a Boxster S and it was a great car. But after I started driving 911s though, she decided she wanted one instead. She loves our Targa, and decided to sell the Boxster. Never thought she would do that. Still, I think the new Boxster GTS is a very beautiful and capable sports car.
Don't agree that 911 guys must always say the 911 is the right choice. I like to think we have more intelligence than that. These are two wonderful cars, with some different characteristics. What luck to have such choice.
Having had a Boxster S before my current 997 C2S, I can say I loved the top-down driving, really found it adds to the experience. Also, I find the 981 Boxster looks stunning. The mid-engine is great for spirited driving and on the track. And yes I fit my golf clubs in the rear trunk just fine, and actually fit my folding pull-cart in the front trunk. Made for fun looks from observers when unpacking at the golf course.
If I didn't need 4 seats, I would pick the 981 Boxster over 997.2 targa.

While I don't have a Boxster, I do have a Cayman S. I don't have a Targa, but I do own a 997 C4S. They are both different but each fantastic in their own way. I can't say I like one better than the other. Asking me to get rid of one would be an auto owner's version of "Sophie's Choice."
So, I am only half-joking when I say, get them both!

I rarely find a 911 owner saying I wish I had a boxster.
I see many boxster owners saying I wish I had a 911.
Now can Porsche make the Boxster to be as good or as fast/powerful as a 911.
Yes they can. However they are geniuses at marketing their products.
Upon introduction years ago. A boxster was a way to get a "cheap" Porsche. Now a Boxster that is not beat by a fully loaded accord at the stop light (ok I am exaggerating a bit) is in the mid 80s (nicely appointed) , and we are all fairly OK with it.
Lots of boxsters being leased. It will be interesting to see what the 2014 981s will price at in 2017-2018
Good luck
