Has anybody had a dealer look at this? If so, what was the solution?
Nothing new to report on my end. Still have the problem - it goes left and right but the moment you try up or down, everything stops until you reboot. It's not been a high priority for me to figure it out. Interestingly, I ran across someone on the Interweb with a 991 who has the exact same issue, so whatever it is, it spans multiple generations.
My mirror started working normally again until a few month later it started doing the same thing. I finally bought a motor online and installed it myself.....Problem solved. This is a very easy repair!

Awesome! Can you share part numbers and overall procedure?
I used - Right Mirror Motor (have memory seats and auto dim) Part # 99762404801. Use your vin and call your dealership to get the correct part # for your car. I cannot remember what instructions I followed. Just google it and you will find some pics showing step by step how to change it. You pop the mirror out (be careful not to crack it) then there are 4 screws I believe and simple unplug motor.....then reverse to put in new one. Very simple.

I can confirm this fix. Just did it to my car. Same part number (my car has auto-dim and memory seats also). Simply pivot the mirror to the far corner so you can get leverage behind it with your fingers and slowly pry it out. It will pop off, exposing the motor. Then it's three Torx T10 bolts to remove. Very simple indeed.
I can also confirm this works on my 997.2. It feels like you will break the mirror when you are removing it, but mine did not break. This is the correct way to remove it.
The part number for the passenger right side mirror is 997-624-048-01, and I was able to order it from Gaudin Porsche Parts for around $130.
Here is what the assembly looks like inside.
I DO NOT recommend taking it apart to replace the individual damaged motor; it is VERY difficult to do without damaging the assembly and plastic locking clips.
I verified that only one motor in this assembly was bad by switching their positions and reinstalling the assembly in the car. You can see these are just standard DC motors, so it's expected they would fail eventually when exposed to the environment (temperature, dust particles, water, humidity, etc.).
