Cold air intake

Has anyone installed one of these in a tiptronic S? I saw a thread where someone had wrapped the end of the tiptronic breather hose in a bit of fly screen mesh.

Don't want to do that so just wondering if there are any more solid installs of a cold air intake on a tiptronic engine. Btw Im talking just about the silicone hose from the stock box to throttle body.

Sadly this is the only air intake mod I am thinking of doing as A. Exposed pod filters are illegal in my state B exposed pod filters may suck in hot air C oiled filters ruin MAFs (I know some people say they don't but I have spoken to life long Porsche mechanics and they say don't do it).

On this subject are there any non oiled drop in filters for 997 c2s? There was a company that did them for the 996 GT2's - the plain rectangle ones, they were non oiled, but not for the carreras - wonder why? find here

Thanks

Other than enhancing the sound, not sure that a CAI will do much for HP gains despite the claims of the manufcaturers.

Most add on CAI's wind up ingesting air from the engine bay in a Porsche. Those that don't simply use the current intake ports that Porsche designed into the engine lid and then they funnel the air through a less restrictive, and less effective, air filters. Kind of hard to justify paying for a system that uses the existing system to get cold air into the engine and then has no impact on HP, torque output or filtration.

I've seen on the fabspeed site that they sell a less restrictive intake hose using the stock air box: http://www.fabspeed.com/porsche-997-...r-upgrade-kit/

I had a Fabspeed air intake installed on my previous car. Had it dyno'd before and after -- there was a 17HP gain at the wheels. So, it does work.

That is impressive for just a CAI. All of the folks (dealer, several tuner shops) that I have spoken with suggest 1 or 2 HP gain at most.

It is impressive and it's "dyno" proven I posted the dyno read-outs a while ago:

It claims being 4 ply silicone the air passing through it is cooler, and with smooth inner walls less restrictive.

So any advice on the tiptronic breather hose as this kit only fits manual?

Also any advice on non oiled drop in filters?

I installed that exact item on my 997.1 C2S. It was an inexpensive mod (as Porsche mods go) that I did purely for the look, to dress up the engine compartment a bit. I don't really put any stock in power gain claims.

I expect the HP gains are < 5, I am however doing it for a little more noise which is another benefit with the resonator plugged. Maybe I should just plug the resonator and leave the stock rubber hose on since no one has advised what to do with the tiptronic breather hose.

Wow.. for $795 that's close to what Porsche's $16,000 X-51 kit produces. I wonder why Fabspeed doesn't sell more of those things.

I am talking about the silicone hose, from stock box to throttle body - not the complete intake kit.

I installed the Fabspeed CAI on my '09 C2S and I love the sound. I never did a dyno before or after so can't prove any gains or losses. However, I do not believe that I lost any power.

One thing to consider on the dyno that was posted by Marion 997 - the temperature difference is about 9 F between the two runs. I don't know how much this will impact the power but it will have some impact. This is not to say that the mod is a bad one because I love mine. Just saying the two runs are not identical conditions.

I became curious about this and looked it up on a calculator just for this type of thing. I was expecting more of a difference. Assuming the calculator is correct, the difference attributable to elevation, temperature, humidity, and air pressure between the two runs only accounts for 0.4% of the difference (roughly 1.2 HP).

Here is a link to the calculator if you ever want to see how these factors can affect the readings: https://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_hp_dp.htm

I installed the FabSpeed intake on a 997.2 C2S as well. I did dyno it before and after (same day) and it made better than expected results. The first three pulls with the intake netted me a best RWHP gain of 14HP and 13TQ. Ambient temps in the mid 60's and 35% humidity. No doubt on a cooler day the HP gains would be even better.

Later that day the car also received their center muffler delete and netted an additional 5RWHP and 8TQ gain. So the combination made for a surprising 19RWHP gain.
