HELP! 997 Shifter Cable Issues

I recently purchased a CPO 2007 Carrera S w/11K miles. Since I got it, I put an additional 600 miles. Not sure the history of the previous owner however I have babied this thing since I got it 2 months ago.

Last night while coming home at the light, the car would not shift out of 1st gear, not could I get it to go into any other gear.

I read the posts about the 997 shifter cable issues. Had the car towed to the dealer to fix however wondering if Porsche has addressed this weakness.

Wondering if a car with such low miles, though it's 7 yrs old would face such problems. Thanks in advanced for any additional insights.

I think it's a fairly common problem. The end pieces are just plastic snap on fasteners.

Upgraded cables or connectors

Update: Dealer confirmed the connector broke. I saw that there are after market connectors available. wondering if anyone here has used them.

Thanks in advanced.

I bought my 2010 C4S Cab last July with 36K on it, and the shifter cable broke in December at 42K (I got stuck in 1st gear and had to have it towed to the Dealer). The Dealer covered it under warranty and actually told me it was not uncommon and could come at almost any mileage. The reality is that the connectors are actually plastic - which kinda surprised me for a car of this value!

Really boggles the mind that they can't or won't come up with a better design for such a simple part that completely disables the car every time it fails. And it seems to fail often. Lots of threads on this topic both here and on RL.

you mean like the alternator harness? like the IMS? like the early cayman oil starvation issues? like the valve guides (or whatever it was) for the 993? like the inherent spin-happy, crash-inducing oversteer in the early models? like the...etc etc etc. let's face it, it seems with each porsche model there will always be some kind of hidden "car disabling feature" or another. look at it like a no cost option, if you will.
