Smog check time, UGH

I have AWE mufflers, headers and cats for my 2006 C2S and last time I "barely" passed smog and this year it may not be the case. I assume the mufflers are fine but are there any aftermarket cats and headers that pass smog tests in CA?

Thanks in advance!

Don't know the answer to your question, but if you go in with your current set up make sure you drive it hard and get the cats real hot before you test.

I just smogged my 997TT today with softronic tune and europipe, thankfully passed without issue but the TT only gets a "sniff" test, no dyno.

Just FYI, California is transitioning to a new system state wide which will be gaining more traction starting this summer. The new machines will no longer require an exhaust reading, they plug straight into your OBDII port and download your ECU readings which evidently log all your exhaust readings. The machine runs an algorithm and determines if you pass.

So for example, with this new system you would fail if you ran straight pipes for 364 days of the year, then swapped to cats before the test.

Make sure you call the smog station in advance and ask what system they use before you show up. But I'm afraid in the next few years all the stations will have these new machines. Hate Cali some times!!

Look into getting some 100 or 200 cell HJS cats and you should be fine. They are German made and I believe there are many people here running them on their Porsches and pass smog.

http://www.hjs-motorsport.de/en/3/33..._100_cpsi.html

And if you can pass smog then you should be able to run these year round and pass the ECU test too. My Europipe exhaust has 100 cell cats and it passed by a wide margin! you just need a high quality part that sounds good and does its job. HJS should meet your needs

Good luck
Art

Thanks Art. Can I leave the AWE headers or do I need to remove those as well?

I'm not sure, hopefully someone with more experience with those parts will chime in.

I'm not in favor of the growing government intrusion into car design but removing basic smog reduction equipment, such as cats, is, shall we say, selfish and disrespectful of the common good, isn't it?

I think it depends on the use of the vehicle. For a daily driver that racks up 10s of thousands of miles per year, then yes I agree 100%. But if it's a "toy" you drive 2K miles a year and want to enjoy it with a bit more visceral feel and sound then I honestly think you should be allowed to do so. Funny thing is my europipe with the 100 cell cats tested cleaner than the average 997 turbo on the road

In any case, if it were up to the California libs we'd all be forced into a Prius or a Leaf tomorrow

Statistics say otherwise. Most of the exhaust pollution is caused by less than 20% of the cars on the road. A "toy" car which pollutes at will is a member of that 20% class.

Cats are a good thing and have been shown to actually help engine performance (first law of thermodynamics). Open pipes for noise making is an infantile behavior. Nothing more ridiculous than a wailing Ferrari at 30MPH in dense traffic. I, for one, think that a stealthy exhaust is a good thing, but I have long grown up.

dbTarga996 is infamous around these parts
My father just ran through this same issue with an AWE setup when he got his gt3 back. I'll try and find out what he did to get it to pass.

I found an ODB "beta" smog shop who did not use a dyno but instead used the ODB port. I almost failed inspection because of my intake but he let it slide. The test PASSED which is awesome, no probes in exhaust pipes and no dyno! I LOVE this new system - I was done within 10 minutes!!!
