What kind of car were you looking for?

Before you purchased your Porsche, what kind of car were you looking for or wanted?

1 - A sports car
2 - A high performance GT cruiser
3 - Luxury for comfort and convenience
4 - A prestige car to impress my friends and feel good about myself

Choose as many that apply to you.... then state your rational for your Porsche purchase. Keep it short.

Definitions:
1 Sports car: A car that is "track ready" with appropriate systems such as braking, oiling, and cooling. A car that you could race, if you had to. Not a real race car but a road car that can be a weekend track car without mods.
2 GT cruiser: A car with high horsepower and acceleration, tight steering and a track car "feel". High in luxury and comfort, quiet for talking on the phone and a nice stereo.
3 Luxury car: Priority on styling and comfort. Smooth comfortable ride, but quick acceleration. An easy every day driver with no sports car inconveniences like little storage.
4 Prestige car: Hey face it... if it wasn't for our desire to show off, we would all be wearing Chairman Mao blue denim overalls and living in a little, adequate cube.

Peace

My 2008 C2S is a weekend car. For daily drivers over the last several years, I have had a 1999 Audi A6, 2003 MB E320, a 2008 BMW 535 and now, a 2012 VW Toureg TDI. I always wanted a 911 since I was 16 years old. I had been looking for a 993 in top condition in 2009 but the prices were so high for those, I went with a new leftover 2008 Carrera S ( the 2010's were just arriving) I do not track my 911, I do not need to impress anyone, I drive it in my free time purely for enjoyment. I also have no desire to "upgrade" to a 991. As I have a different car as my daily driver, I like the relatively raw edge that the 997 has. Only a 911 will do!

I have a similar story. The 997 is a weekend car. My daily is a BMW 550i and before that I had mostly SUVs (X5/Range Rover). I tend to work a lot so sometimes I like to vacate life for a second and go for a ride to relax. I wanted something as different from daily routine as possible that would force me to NOT work while "vacating". My search began looking for a well maintained 993 but decided the AC is too weak for Florida weather. Ended up with a 987 Boxster S which was a FANTASTIC/possibly better weekend car though after just a few short months 911 envy had me moving in a different direction. Somedays I miss the Boxster as it was a blast to drive (more agile, better sound) but then I look at the 911 and smile.

Though I ended up with a car equipped with Nav, Blue Tooth and PDK, it still gives me a moment to get away, even though I may take a call here and there. Oh, and the vented seats are a great bonus.

Just came back from a 2hr drive through Central Florida back roads. Feeling refreshed!

I'm probably the outlier. I have a 1965 shelby cobra as my weekend car and just picked up the 997.2 as my daily driver. I had a luxury sedan as my daily driver but I wanted something more fun as my daily driver. I hope it's not a mistake to drive a 997.2 daily (maintenance and repair wise)

My daily driver was a Honda Pilot with 150K miles. Even though it ran fine and was in good shape, I was looking for a replacement SUV (X5, RX350, etc...) when it occurred to me that 90% of my driving is solo. So I kept the Pilot for Costco runs and ski trips and bought a 2008 Cayman as a daily driver. 3 years later, I upgraded to a C2S cab. To answer the OP's original question, when I bought the Cayman I was looking for a "sports car" that was reasonably quick with exceptional handling.

I've decided I'd rather drive mine and deal with the depreciation than have it sit in the garage. Maintenance is not an issue. Unless you drive ALOT, most of the pricey maintenance items (plugs, brake fluid) are time based regardless of mileage, and these cars seem to do better when driven regularly.

Both A and B, but mostly A.

As a sports car purchase, I was also considering a Boxster -- cheaper, more agile. But in the end I decided 911's rear seats / parcel shelf make the car much more usable and avoid the fate of being a garage queen.

As for B, people say 911 has become a GT cruiser, but I find it a very bad one at that... most amenities you expect from a lower end car are either optional or not available. I only wanted something more comfortable than an Exige, and 911 fits the bill.

#1. At 16, I always wanted a 911. Was going to pay cash, but my insurance agent said, "Son, you may be able to pay cash for a 911, but you won't be able to even afford the monthly insurance of it!"

Bought a Toyota Celica instead. As soon as I the insurance was manageable, I bought my very first 911. Decades later, I still drive Porsches.

When with the family, I do drive the LandCruiser -- somehow, they refuse for me to cut their legs off. hahahaha

Heck, at the time I wasn't even looking. back in '09 I went up to the area's Ferrari/Aston Martin/Maserati/Porsche dealership just to drool on their cars. Ended up coming back the next day and trading my Corvette on a new 911.

Haha would you believe I started looking at Focus ST's?

Here's a thread from another forum that talks about my adventure!

I had a great BMW 2000 Z3M roadster. I decided to get a C7 corvette since the reviews were so glowing as a replacement. I always in the back of my mind wanted a Porche 911 but out of my weekend driver price range. Sold the BMW and went to talk to the Chevy guys. Stopped by Hendrick BMW to say hello to a friend and wandered over to their Porche shop to drool. 2007 997 C4S cab had just been traded in on a new turbo. 16000 miles and looked brand new. Less then the corvette. Quick drive and I was sold. Decided in 4 years the Porche would still be a Porche. The Vette would be a 4 year old Chevy with a huge depreciation hit!

1 - 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS, but during the PPI it was determined it needed the windshield wiper switch rebuilt ($2900) plus a fuel injection overhaul (could have been as much as $4000). I walked away and decided to go with something a bit more reliable. That said, the 328 is still one of my favorite cars . . . don't know why, but it is.

Really 1.0 only. I had an AMG C and wanted something a bit more engaging. The 2008 997 C2 gets driven to work twice a week and out on the weekends. Normal daily is a Merc ML320CDI (big difference). There is of course the sweet 1968, 911 in the garage ...
