Question of the day ...
Question of the day ...
I've been trying to gather as many data points as I can in order to choose :
1. Fidelity platinum extended warranty
2. Extend the factory warranty by doing CPO
3. Just save my money and handle repairs as they are necessary. (In this option, I neither have the time, space, or patience to even attempt any repairs myself) so I would take it to an Indy shop.
If I choose option 3 - I'll need another data point: Over the life of your 997 (.1 and .2) how much money has been spent on repairs? Even if warranty covered it, what is your total cost in repairs to date?
So... If you had a reserve of about $5,000 which would you buy?
1. The Fidelity warranty which is 4,000 for 6 years
2. The CPO is $4,200 for 2 years.
3. Pay out of pocket for the repairs as they come
I need your input ! :-)

I'd opt for some warranty with a 997.1 or PDK but since you have neither I might take a chance and self insure...but that's easy for me to say since it's not my risk. Good luck.
Can the same be said of parts like wheel bearings, suspension parts, transmissions (manual and PDK), various sensors, air conditioning system, electrical, etc, etc? Care to take a cross-country trip with no warranty and have a major failure 500 miles from home? Me? I have a nationwide warranty program recommended by my dealer because I am not in the position to cough up the cash for a major breakdown; plus I have found that most independent shops are not up to speed on fixing the newer models. If nothing else, an extended warranty is good for piece of mind.

my "data"
2009 C2S, 28k miles
Only repair was 3rd brake light. All other work was maintenance. And I think now one of my 2 horns is not working. Did not get that quoted yet.

look at my posts, I had the same issue, fixed it myself with a replacement horn for $40 dollars.
Sounds like my wife's car! Except hers is cab. We bought in December '13 with a 4-year/50K mile CPO warranty. We're in the San Mateo Highlands but she goes to SF for work so you might not see us around much!
I would do #3 and keep the $5k. the only maintenance I had to pay out of pocket for was $2500 for the coolant tank. I did have a rat chew through wiring that cost $3500 but I got insurance to cover with a $500 deduct. other than that routine maintenance.

I think I would self insure, but only if I had a solid and honest mechanic on my side.
I have a 997.1 S that I've owned since new. It has 63k miles on it and, in my experience, save the money and fix things as they happen. In my case, buying an extended warranty would have been a waste of money. YMMV of course.
Save your $$ and pay as you go - after 6+ years of iteration, the 997 has been honed almost to perfection with most quirks eliminated. My only non-maintenance expense on 2006 carrera has been a failed waterpump at 25K miles
3 and 3, I had a RMS leak fixed under warranty, my 997 CPO warranty expired two years ago. I have not brought any warranty and don't need it. Most items that are wear and tear isn't covered under warranty. I'll take my chances on the IMS issue. My dealer told me I had worn inner tie rods, quoted $1,300 for inner tie rod and an alignment. Thought it was bizarre to have worn tie rods at 23K miles, did my research and found out that there were a bad batch of tie rods in 2006 models. Took it to an Indy, the pulled into the garage, came back and said, why are you replacing tie rods at 23K miles. I said dealer said it was worn, they said they will confirm. They check and it was worn, they also thought it was a good idea to replace inner and outer together. and had the inner and outer tie rod replaces with an alignment, came out to be a few dollars under $800. Besides an oil/filter change every year ($160) and brake flush ($150) every other year. It's been reliable.
