Torque for Magnetic Drain Plug (engine oil)

I just did my first oil change in my 997.2. It went according to all the threads on here, etc. I drained it for hours and it still had a slight drip, but I measured about 7.5-8 quarts came out. I re-filled to 8 quarts after driving around a bit and it measures great (2 bars below full @ 200 degrees).

However, I have a question.

I believe I stripped out the drain plug on installation. It came in packaging as "magnetic Drain plug" and had a sticker on it that said 19 ft/lbs. I assumed this was an accident since everyone says its 37 ft lbs.

Well to be safe i torqued it to 19 ft lbs. first. It went in smooth, perfect. All seemed good. But I was worried; would it leak if I didn't torque it to 37 ft/lbs? So I torqued it down to 37. Well, as soon as I started pulling at 37 it rounded the inside of the plug. Damn.

Is it possible that 19 ft lbs is enough like the packaging said? I have never heard of anyone else torquing it to anything other than 37, and now i'm lost on what to do.

The sticker on the magnetic plug wAs correct (19 Ft/#).

Torque is not 37. The 37 was the torque for the factory plug.

Sounds like it was marked correctly. What brand was the plug? Plugs made of softer alloys (T6061) will strip out around 37 ft/lbs. There are some stronger plugs on the market made to be torqued to the factory spec though.

The plug was the magnetic one from suncoast. I'm not sure the brand they use, but it stated it is stronger than the stock one and specifically referenced that its harder to strip!!! LOL. Sigh, I need to never think for myself again.

At your next oil change you might need to use a pipe wrench (aka money wrench) to remove the plug. Ask me how I know

even the original plugs don't need 37. before i switched to LN magnetic, i was using around 25 so that i didnt have to worry (read: LESS worry) about stripping the threads or rounding the head. never a drip, on street or track.

This is what i'm dreading. By any chance, anyone have a video/link of someone doing this so I don't kill myself trying to get the stupid thing out? I searched couldn't find that specifically.

Hard to strip, I say "challenge accepted suncoast u magnificent son of a gun."

When you say "stripped" you're just referring to rounding the hex opening correct? No threads stripping?? I recently ordered the same part from Suncoast and there was no label on the little plastic envelope that stated torque value...so I torqued mine to 37 ft lbs per spec and didn't have any issues. Are you sure you had the right size hex (I believe it was 8mm??)? Now I'm going to worry about it until the next oil change.

I have the same plug and I have always torqued it to 19 pounds. Not a single drop.

Just changed my oil and had previously torqued to 19 but then found out that the factory specs were 37. I got it to about 25 and decided that there was no way I was going to 37, for fear of something stripping. Maybe my oil will spew out later on, but a cannot imagine it needing to be that tight.

Yeah, specifically it was the inside of the hex opening, not the threads.

Are you sure the spec to which you refer wasn't in NM not Ft-lbs?

OEM spec is 25nm or 19lb-ft isn't it?

If you rounded the inside i would think the hex you used might not have veen the exact one.

Oil filter is 19 ft lbs and drain plug is 37 ft lbs. Hex (not Torx) size for drain plug is 8mm.

It was really clear, it said "19 lbs ft." I was really confused because I figured it could handle at least 37 lb ft since that is stock and its supposedly more durable than the stock one from the description. Alas, that is what i get for thinking.
