997 Shifter Cable - Adjustment or Replacement

Since our cars have shifter cables, I was wondering how many has had their cables adjusted or how many replaced a broken cable.

My old Porsches do require cable adjustments since cables tend to stretch over time. Now, in searching the forum, I did read that someone has adjusted his cable with restored better shifting.

Thanks.

Leaning towards looking at adjusting my cables, or if enough broken cables were out there, I might consider the Numeric product.

Thanks.

kalamazoo is infamous around these parts
If you are post-warranty, replace them with aftermarket. OEM is very weak

Have you replaced yours? If so, at what mileage?

For reference, I am at almost 70k and I think I still okay though I want to investigate subtle tightening.

Adjusting the cables is simple. You just need the green shift alignment tool.

My shift cable snapped at ~45k. The new cables we're much smoother, less friction.

Think my previous reply may have gotten lost in the ether.

Porsche cable. I would not upgrade the cable unless you upgraded the shifter as well, since the shifter is the main source of slop.

No sweat. My iPhone 4s isn't doing me help also with the new IOS 8 --- spellcheck isn't as great resulting to my grammar and message going into limbo.

Anyone else adjusted or replaced their cable? If so, at what mileage?

I replaced my stock shifter to Porsche SSK and Numeric shift cables @ 34k miles.
My stock units were in good condition, but lacked the notchy feel im accustomed to in previous cars, plus the stock shifter is absolute rubbish ....too long a throw.

I just uninstalled my stock shift block because it felt like it had too much slop. Now that it`s out it appears that the block is fine but the shift cables must have lengthened a bit and needed re-adjusted.

Anyway, I am thinking about getting the GT3 shift block (same throw as stock) or the Numeric adjustable one.

Regards,

CF

The numeric products are very tempting. The question now though is...

If shifting force stretches the cable and the Numeric cable don't stretch, where would the shifting force go to? I would guess that the next weak link would be where the cable ends at the tranny. I have not seen this end, but I wonder if it's easily and cheaply fixed.

For now, I am leaning toward greasing my box and either adjusting of replacing the cable with a factory one.
