Went to Blue Mountain last week and it snowed for two days. Light, fluffy, powder like snow. Found some back roads with no traffic and the roads were not plowed. Had one of the most amazing drives in a 997.2 C2S. Drifting through corners was just sublime. If you have never taken your Porsche out in the snow, you are missing out my friends... To finish the day, went to Scandinavian Spa for a massage and outdoor sauna. Perfect...
If anyone would like to go for a drive in the snow, I drive up around King City after storms. Anyone interested, you are most welcome!
This is the first winter in a 997 for me. I was concerned how the car would handle when conditions were bad. I got winter tires and then when the first snow storm came, the care moved around a lot. It first made me nervous. So instead of being over cautious, I purposely made the car slide, when it was safe. Then I got to know how the car behaves and now I have full confidence.
In tight corners, I use the e-brake to initiate the slide and then modulate the throttle to keep the rear tires loose. In long sweeping turns, I just break the rear wheels loose using the gas and keep it loose with modulation. OMG! There is no other feeling then going around a corner sideways in a Porsche. This car handles so predictably.
If you guys have never taken your car out in the snow, you are missing out!
Instead of using the hand brake, use some left foot braking and some throttle; will prevent a bit understeer, and will make the whole experience much more smooth.
Been driving C4S cabs in the snow for over 10 years. Amazing handling.
Caveat though;
if the snow is deep and the street is unplowed, there is a good chance, the bottom pan of the car will rub/flatten the snow and that can get you stuck.
It's happened to me twice in 10 years, since I thought I could plow through it. Not.
I've been driving my 997.1 TT around Erie, PA with its -10 degree snowy weather. With snow tires recently installed the only worry I have now is the front nose becoming an ad hoc snow plow. It's tons of fun when people don't expect to see either a Porsche in this weather nor any sports car carve through the snow with agility.
