997.2 Exhaust G-Hack?
997.2 Exhaust G-Hack?
Hi Guys
I have recently got myself back into a 911 and this time I have gone for a 2009 gen 2 car so a different set up to my old gen 1 2006.
My old gen 1 had PSE so never looked into this much , but my new Gen 2 does not have PSE. So what is the most cost effective route for me as I know the gen 1 and gen 2 have a different set up. I have heard mixed reports on whether the G-hack works on the gen 2 that well ?
Has anyone carried out themselves/ link to any vids. A few threads have suggested a hack and then upgraded centre box pipe am interested in other owners in the same situation.
I like noise! my last car was a XKR with a full S/S System it sounded like thunder so the Porkers a tad quite at the mo... looking for a cost effective solution as just spent a fortune on an Aero Kit lol
Thanks Paza

On my 997.1, the gundo hack was hard to beat in terms of bang for the buck. It may be more than you want to spend right now, but sport cats add a very nice rumble to the car, ad well as a demonstrable power bump. I was lucky enough to get find a used Fabspeed setup, and installation was straightforward.
I'm not sure whether the 997.2 lends itself to the Helmholtz resonator bypass. This is often described as a cold air intake, but it's not. Although it's often sold for $100-200, it's a simple hose that can be found on eBay for $30, and adds great intake sound. My understanding is that the only reason the resonator was developed was to keep the car compliant with EU noise regulations. On the 997.1, it took about 10 minutes to install. Good luck.

Do the gundo hack first and then you can add the center muffler change only if you need to. I have the gundo on my 997.2 and love it. Just right and you can t beat the cost to end up with the PSE exhaust.
This my plan , has anyone done a similar bypass on the centre box? was justing thinking about this earlier today? as 700 pounds for two small centre pipes seems a lot when you could apply the same theory ? thoughts guys
I was thinking if it did not work the centre box are not expense to replace, quite a few bits kicking around on ebay etc

I was also thinking I might as well do both now and pay for labor one time. I was looking at the Sharkwerks muffler bypass.

It's interesting there's hardly any info about it on the gen 2 lots of views saying its a waste of time but no real evidence, apart from some small reviews... nothing like the info on 997.1/996. i found one vid of a G-Hack for a gen2 online.. but pretty poor quality.
Am going to do a before and after on a decent camera not , a mobile phone. Now we all know its nothing like hearing it in real life but will give an honest review. I have had a 996 C4S with PSE and a 997.1 C2S with PSE , so hopefully I be able to give a good account. But I think we need this nut cracked once and for all.
Really interested if anyone has done anything with the central box alongside the same theory as a G-Hack?
Cheers Paza

Hey OP, check this thread out, just realized I was subscribed to it. Has some useful info on the gundo hack for the 997.2. This guy did it himself for the most part and was extremely pleased in the outcome. They also talk about how the diameter of the pipe makes a difference in sound, e.g. 1.75" diameter pipe = fister hack: the sound isn't as loud, but still sounds good, 2" diameter pipe = gundo hack, a little louder, throatier, and everyone who does it seems extremely pleased.

On its website, Shark Werks has a detailed "tuning guide" for the 997.2. In it is an interesting section on how the various components of the exhaust contribute to the sound, and what various mods will do to it. I can't say I agree with everything they say, but it's definitely worth a read. It's also well illustrated with pics of the system, cutaways, etc.
I have the Fister exhaust on my 997.2, I will try to post a sound clip on Friday when I get back into the area. I am happy with the sound but I think I will replace the x pipes at some point.
If yes to both, this is why I am thinking of doing the gundo hack and the sharkwerks center muffler bypass in one shot. (unless there is a better option than sharkwerks....AWE Tuning cross over pipes? but that seems out of the price range for essentially the same product)
My only question is will I lose any low end torque? I think some members mentioned losing low end torque with this center muffler bypss or does that have to do with a different modification?

For me, I would like it a bit louder but the sound is great. I am just really used to the fabpseed i had on my 997.1.
The mod is worth it and i think the the x-pipe or center muffler bypass it will sound even better.

Also how long should this Gundo hack take the exhaust shop? The guy I went to told me "that german metal is real thick, and will take around 5 hours to make the holes". Plus the time to weld the 2" pipe and installation of the SW x pipes.
1 full day seems long for this job.

Maybe he s a slow worker , the question is what s the cost?
I took my apart myself and can tell you it may be a full day if he includes taking everything apart , welding and then putting everything together.
I agree, he may be slow Are you being charged by the hour? I got a flat rate of about $300, and I had my car back less than 3 hours later. It was done by mechanics who'd never done the Gundo hack before, but who understood what I wanted done. There's really no reason to be on the clock, as it's very straightforward. On the other hand, no mechanic likes to promise completion by a specific hour of the day. Other things come up, people call, emergencies come up, etc. My car has been in the shop for all week for things that probably would take 4-5 hours if done straight through. It makes me crazy, but I try to live with it.
I'm already looking for other spots, specifically Porsche specialized garages. The one i mentioned above was an exhaust shop that deals with all kinds of cars.
Has anyone got the gundo done by Protosport in Pompton Plains, NJ? I sent them an email with attached pics of gundo hacked mufflers and waiting for reply.
I want to get this done next week, before my 1st road trip in the 911.
