Cr@p! #6 cylinder failing. Suggestions?

2006 CS, owned 10 1/2 years 48'000 mile left side sooting
and right bank ticking has worsened rapidly in last few
months since water pump failure (coincidental?) Not a daily
driver but my transportation as 2nd car.

Debating to sell as is with caveat or to have rebuilt.

A year wait is less than great. Cost is a real issue.

Has anyone had engine rebuilt by indy in NY/LI area?
Is that even a possibility?

Other ideas/options would be appreciated

I'll have tech pull plug and scope tomorrow but....

Man, that sucks. When the water pump failed did you change it yourself or have it done? Were any large pieces of the impeller blades missing and unaccounted for. If so, those wedging into the narrow coolant passageways and creating hot-spots around the cylinders might be the cause of the failure progression.

RND Engines uses the techniques and parts developed by Jake Raby (IMS Solution) and Charles Navarro (Nickasil cylinder linings) etc and believe they sell turn-key motors that can be shipped without the long build delay so you can have it installed locally. Maybe look into that avenue.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Done by shop. Job was clean, no debris, nothing in filter, blades etc intact. It did not overheat prior as per oil/water temps.

I'll look into RND. Car is with shop for scoping. After all this time I feel like I am in danger of losing a good friend.

Thanks

Re RND: not finding them Petra. Where are they?

I don't get why regular heavy hitters in this don't have a number of short blocks on hand for this sort of thing. For some of us a year is a big chunk out of the driving time we have left.

Have you had it looked at? It could just be a bad lifter or valve and that's not a deal breaker as long as you fix it before it becomes one.

Just got back from shop. There is a longitudinal score running the length or the #6 cylinder bore. Engine needs to be replaced. Exploring options now.

Anyone with 2006+ 997.1 need not fret over Ims. The killer is bore scoring. All the maintainence and tlc in the world will not help. This is a fatal design flaw. Petza's suggestion is favored by my tech. We'll see what estimated final cost will be before proceding. Thanks

Check Out Hartech in the UK. Given the value of the British Pound right now it may be your best option. You drop your engine and ship it for a re-sleave with Nickies.

Porsche needs to get sued for this poor design. They should at least provide you with the parts to fix this issues caused by a bad design.

Agree about class action law suit. Personally I will keep this car for reasons I won't bore you with. Do I want to repair it with replacement defective parts?

About 20K plus you have to pay the core fee up front. Another 14K which is refunded. The last complication is a deal breaker for me.
