997 S and 4S recall
997 S and 4S recall
The Porsche AG, Stuttgart, recals world-wide 18.627 vehicles of the type 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S for an exhaust final pipes replacement. Vehicles which were produced between 20 April 2004 and 21 October 2005 are affected. In this period, final mufflers exhaust final pipes were installed at which the welding seams between securing clip and final pipe can be implemented insufficiently. Since these welding seams can break, the possibility exists that when driving a rattling noise at the final pipe arises, it can come also to a loss of the final pipe.
So far approximately 30 cases of this kind are known. The workshop stay for the vehicles concerned amounts to approximately 25 minutes. New exhaust final pipes at the rear muffler are installed which ensures a safe connection by improved welding seams. For the customers, who are informed shortly, this action is free.

I wonder if I can get a discounted upgrade to the chrome tips that I have always wanted ;-)
Here is the actual release:
ATLANTA, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Porsche today announced a recall of
certain Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S sports cars for potentially
defective exhaust pipe tips. The recall involves those cars built between
April 20, 2004, and October 21, 2005, 5,385 of which were sold in the United
States and Canada.
On these cars, it has been discovered that the exhaust pipe tips fitted to
the tailpipes might have inadequate welding seams between the fastening clamp
and the tailpipe itself. Should these welding seams fail, the tips can vibrate
lose from the tailpipe and fall off. To date, approximately 30 instances of
this occurrence have been reported worldwide.
Owners of these potentially affected 911s will be informed shortly to take
their cars to an authorized Porsche dealer where new exhaust tips with
improved welding seams will be installed at no charge.
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Ga., and its
subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche
sports cars and Cayenne(R) sport utility vehicles for the United States and
Canada. A wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG,
PCNA employs approximately 300 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts,
service, marketing and training for its 211 U.S. and Canadian dealers. They,
in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in-class service.

I am wondering whether anyone from this board have yet experienced a falling exhaust tip? It is kind of embarrassing.

I replaced with the SpeedArt mufflers/tips.
It is already disappointing to have a twin pipe exhaust dressing up like a "quad" pipe exhaust. Now the quad look tip may also fall off. What is going on? This surely is not impressive at all.

I agree - the whole "fake" quad tip concept is lame. BMW, Chevy and many others release affordable quad exhaust solutions without having to pretend....
sad to say it but Porsche deserved this recall...
