Proper power window diagnosis
Proper power window diagnosis
Does anybody have the workshop manuals or perhaps experience beyond just "resetting" the windows? Quite often my windows will not roll back up when closing (they dip to clear the seal/air deflector). I have to get back in, turn key, roll up window and then try again. I also actually have had them get stuck and I wait a few key cycles and they work again.
Its very intermittent. Its a fairly simple system so I am trying to determine what inputs could cause the above outputs.
Ive done all the normal stuff (disconnect battery for extended period of time, reset window procedure etc)
I don't think its relevant, but this is actually on a 987. The door actuation electronics and mechanicals are all the same (ive owned both 997 and 987).

When you operate the window switches, do they feel like they have 2 positions in each direction - one just off center that moves it until you release the button and then a 2nd detent if you push it further that engages the auto up or down procedure?
The window behaves the same in both positions? If so, that sure sounds like limit settings.

No, they work as they should.. when they work. I would say 50% of the time they "dip" and don't go back up when I close the door. 95%+ of the time I can hop back in, turn key, and roll them up.. and the second try works usually.
Just for fun I just hopped in the car and windows are working 100% normal.

Another one.. today the driver side window got stuck half way.... when that occurred, the passenger side window would not move either. The power window motors will also inoperable. Seems like maybe an overcurrent situation with the window motor caused a fault, which the car reset automatically? (worked again 5 min later)...
same problem too, on 2006 997.1. doesn't matter if I manually hold or try to use the automatic option on the switch, windows roll up maybe 50-75%, then rolls back down to about 25%. Usually works second try but have to hold the switch until the window is 100% up. moon roof does the same thing.

Little update for those that offered guidance. As per the usual, it was it was aftermarket error, not factory error (sort of). First of all the brown/white wire that showed in the 987 wiring diagrams to go under the seat simply didn't. I was able to find the same wire in the 997 diagrams, and it was called "TERM31 BATTERY", which made me think it was a unique Term 31. So I followed the wire up (not under the seat) into the dash and seemingly toward the front of the car. I removed the trim around the battery area and sure enough, I found a factory ground not hooked up. Here is what is crazy, it has worked perfectly for YEARS. It must have been wedged under the battery tray or something. The car has been put back together and running since 2019 ish. Re grounded this wire on the proper stud, and everything is perfect!

Unfortunately mine looks completely different from stock, as I have removed the standard battery wiring and replaced it
Id have to look at a stock car to understand where it was originally connected.
