Just created a slick spot...
This evening I went to the video store to grab a couple vids for the kids and once I pull into the parking stall my cars stutters and dies. I restart the car and all of a sudden I get knocking noises from the engine compartment. I immediately kill the engine and check the engine compartment and oil levels. Oil levels were fine and nothing out of the ordinary in the engine compartment. Not wanting to do any additional damage, I call porsche road side assistance and request a tow truck. 1 hour later a flat bed comes to my rescue but the driver needed me to move the car back several feet and position it perpendicular to my current position ( I parked in the stall facing the building on a downward incline). The incline was to steep to push so I was forced to start the car and moved it to the desired position. The cars clanging the whole time and my nuts have now moved into my abdomen. Stop the car and jump outside and now a stream of oil begins to flow from underneath. She's been towed to the shop and I'll call tommorrow to find out what the hell just happened. She's a 2005 carrera S with 8000 miles. Any speculations on what's really going on?
Sorry to hear that, DEL....sounds like your intermediate shaft is toast.
Here is someone w/similar experience...(read the 1st post on second page too--symptoms sound exactly like yours). Thank God for warranties.
Please post your progress on this, will they reset the warranty on new engine?

C4cortez - you hit it on the head. Dealership called back and said that my intermediate shaft went out and that they need to order a new engine. The service advisor said a lot of stress is put on this part and that he dealt with a few 996's with this issue. Bad news - no car for a week and another long, painful break-in period. Good news - new engine and several new quarts of 0w40. Car has not been tracked so warranty is still effective.
