if you never driven the S, then the c2 will seem fast enuff. but if you have driven both, you can tell the diff for sure.
S gets more HP, better brakes, more options, badge. if money is not an issue then get the S. you cant go wrong either way. if you are talking about another 7k for the c4 then IMO, its not worth it.
good luck!

Most people are just not going to experience the benefits of the small performance increases of the S (or the C2 at full bore for that matter) in day to day driving.
If you're an ego driver maybe 30 hp and PASM for $10k makes sense. In my opinion, save your money and get a C2 and a supercharger.
I've tracked with a C2S and Cayman S in my C4 and dusted them both.
The original Porsche's were AWD and the 997TT has AWD for a reason: better handling and performance in all conditions.

I second this...

porsche started AWD with the later gen turbo's to harness the power... it certainly was not for handling reasons. if that were the case GT3's and GT3 RS's would be AWD along with many other racecars but they aren't because AWD isn't optimum for handling. it's a fact. as for the C4's/C4S's.... it is for inclimate weather conditions. that is all... i will give you that the 997 4's are FAR superior to the 996's 4's but that about as far as that goes from a performance perspective.

If you are planning on retro-fitting every single different part from an S model to a Non-S model you'd spend much more than 10K.
I believe the Carrera S is the best all-around sports car money can buy. And I've had many cars to compare with.
Anyway... a porsche is a porsche.
I own a Carrera non S that I bought in March. This is my 3rd P car and I've moved from a Boxster S to a 996 C4 to the 997. I love my car and so far I'm fine with the power and handling. I can see how PASM can add some benefit to handling at high speed but other than that a few more horses are minimal and the brakes are the same as the S. Oh, you can get the XLF, Sport exhaust on a standard Carrera. As the STIG said, it's a Porsche and that ain't bad either way.

Brakes are not the same in Carrera and Carrera S. This and the 30hp/extra torque are the most noticeable when driving. You cannot upgrade to the larger steel brakes as previously posted in this thread. The only upgrade brake option for both cars is to ceramics.
To sum up, the main differences are:
Bi-Xenon headlights
PASM
19" wheels
Silver gauges
Aluminum look interior trim
Sports steering wheel
and the following which cannot be optioned
30 HP
extra torque (especially mid range)
larger 996 turbo brakes
Higher performing cooling pump and an oil/water heat exchanger with two additional cooling layers
Self-adjusting clutch
