Changing my 996 Turbo for a 997 Carrera S
996tt for 997s
I did the very thing you are considering. I had a heavily modded tt and every 16 year old in a mustang would race their engine at every light. 500hp is not real practical around town. All that being said, I do miss the power but I love my c2cab more.. Maybe a gt3 in a couple of years.
997S vs 996TT
I traded my 2002 996TT for a 2005 997S. Both are daily drivers. I had over 30K miles on the turbo. I already have 26K on my S. I enjoyed the Turbo very much, but absolutely LOVE my S. The new car is 500 lbs lighter, rear wheel drive, higher revving. It is more of a driving experience!
I would constantly hit the rev limiter in the Turbo. Redline was only 6250. Just when things were moving and starting to sound good...shift!! The Carrera S has a 7200 rpm redline. Steering is lighter, faster, more precise. The rear-wheel drive makes for more control in turns. It is more involving.
I cannot comment on accelleration. The turbo had gobs of torque. However, the S is no dog. Both are great cars. You cannot go wrong.

996TT is faster than 996GT3, 996GT3 is good deal faster than 997S, they arent comparable no matter how much you think one "feels" as fast as the other! BTW 996TT revs out to 6750 stock, not 6250, not evne a 500rpm diff from C2S, and with an ecu upgrade they bring it up to 7k redline!
997S is an awesome car, i liked it alot, reminded me of my old M3 just more performance oriented! If you are looking for a change 997S is an all around awesome car, lots of fun and daily driveable!
FYI you can hav eyour turbo fully dialed in to your liking though, without the numb steering feel and without it feeling heavy, JIC and sways properly setup make the car feel very smooth and flat!

Keep the Turbo! It has more prestige, it's better looking, faster and rarer. If you want the car to be more "tossable" get the suspension revamped and lighten it! GT3 seats, carbon hood, LW battery, 2wd conversion....

Not too often you hear someone hating their modded 996TT which can be tuned to your liking. However, black can be a pain to keep clean and you can't beat that new car smell. Drive what utimately makes you happy since it's your hard earned money. Go for it...
I went through similar thoughts...but as much as I liked the 997S...The TT was just something I was i love with...really a work of art..I even prefer it in many ways to the new TT.
I finally 'settled' on a 996 GT-3 which I am loving...
I can understand why you would want a 997S, they are great cars but the TT is just very special...
Good problem to have.
