Sorry but this is BS, driven both and the turbo might have lag in 3rd or 4th at lower speeds, but once your launching at 3k or above, and even hitting it in first gear, there is hardly ANY lag because the gearing is so short in 1st, i dont buy it but w/e!

Lag? That's a good one. With my modifications and the amount of torque I have at such a low rpm there just isn't such a thing. I did the opposite of what you're contemplating. I loved that Carrera S but it doesn't even come close to the acceleration and thrill that you get from the turbo. You will feel a huge difference in power unless you get that thing supercharged.

Well stock of course there is a bit, but not off a launch or hitting it in first even for a stock turbo! And then modded? Lets not go there, my RUF has absolutely ZERO lag, well just about hah, so much power and torque instantly down low that i fry the tires 2nd and part of 3rd under boost!

i sold my 996 turbo early and took a 997 carrera s cab black black sport design wheel s lowered,it looked hot .. speed wise completely different it felt so slow compared with time i actually really liked the car i felt it was usable in reality had alot of fun in it ...now i have a 997 turbo black on black simply awesome!!! so much tighter and the way it puts the power down is so easy.. porsche turbo always the benchmark.. !!

Don't do it!!!! I just had a chance to see the 3.8 motor disassembled. Nothing like the 996, 996tt or 997tt design. Horible one piece crankcase.barrel design. Connecting rods are junk! They cast them, bore them and then snap them at the big end to allow you to unbolt the caps. This motor had 5,000 miles on it and already had deep scores in the cylinder bores.

Stick with the 996tt or the 997tt!!!

I would agree the turbo engines are of a better/more expensive design. I disagree about your listing of the 996 NA engine however, as these are no better if not worse than the 997 3.6 or 3.8. I see from your avatar that you drive a 96 993T, very nice, I love the aircooled cars. My new 07 997S has far too many squeaks and rattles; no wonder Porsche's profit per vehicle is at the industry top.

Don't go 996TT to 997S. If you want a different feel go in a different direction altogether..maybe a AM Vantage?
