The SL is not faster than the E55. It's heavier and actually has worse aerodynamics. It has been rumored for quite some time that the HP difference between the E (476) and SL (493) was actually closer - a marketing ploy to keep the SL owners happy about not being out gunned by the lesser E.

As far as fun to drive I'll take the 997S everyday
Its not uncommon for a 997S to beat an E55 from a standstill or a low speed/gear roll.. 997S can easily hit mid 12's with 113mph traps, and its not uncommon to see E55's getting similar times.. But ofcorse there is no doubt that the e55 is the faster car. On a highway roll im sure it will pull away with ease.
How mucd does an e55 weigh.

I had an 06 E55 and it is certainly a faster car than the 997S; with 469 hp and a massive 516 ft lbs of trq it just hauled *** with numerous major mag's publishing consistent QM traps of 114-116mph vs. the 997s's 109-114...but it's a four door sedan and just not as sexy or fun to drive as a 997S, period.

yep, AMGs are monsters. i considered the e63 before deciding to order my 997S. e63 is super fast in a straight line, and definitely a freeway monster, but in the end it's just too big and heavy, and can't handle like a 997S. but if i wanted an uber-sedan, the e63 is definitely the one i'd get. apples and oranges really.

I raced an E55 Renntech stage 5 around 490rwhp in my stage 2 996TT. Pulled it by about 1.5 car lengths from second gear roll (around 35mph). Maintained lead till about 135mph...then E55 started pulling a bit closer and by 160 he was probably by my rear bumper. We did this run about 4 separate times and it was the same each time. It was an 2005 E55

Thanks, I'm well aware of Porsche's internal designations of the 911 but he mentioned "my buddies 996 S"...maybe it was a 996C4S as there is not such thing as a 996 S, at least that I'm aware of.
