wow, i got 21.6 mpg!!

my first long drive on the carerra from a overnight trip to san diego. put on 296 miles at average speed of 46 mph. i actually got 21.6 mpg on the trip computer. there was a lot of traffic, at least 1/2 of the trip. speaking of traffic, what the hell happened to san diego. i live there 17 years ago and never seen traffic anywhere!

I routinely get 24 or so mpg on the highway, even in Sport mode. Once direct-injected engines come to 911s, that should jump into the 26mpg range or so...

I think it has a lot to do with driving style. I'm amazed at the number of people that "surge" their cars here in the US.

I mean, instead of holding the throttle at precise position and anticipating uphill and downhill stretches I mostly see people doing the " throttle off, then throttle on, throttle off, throttle on, throttle off" style driving ... resulting in that "surging" sound and high fuel consumption.

I suspect the drivers here on 6speed are mostly in tune with how engines work and how they consume fuel, but the unwashed masses could probably gain an extra 20% in fuel savings just by changing their driving patterns and paying attention rather than jabbering away on their phones.

On a run to the grand canyon from silicon valley I was seeing close to 400 mile on a tank in my supercharged 996 C2. 400 miles to a tank on a 420hp car ? Not bad.

Around town here going to work and back I never see less than 200 miles per tank.

Everytime I go for a drive, I reset the mpg gauge. I think it makes the reading more accurate for that given trip.

For comparison on some recent cars I've owned:

Mitsu Evo VIII (tuned) - ~18mpg in city driving, up to 28 on the highway
Honda S2000 - 21/29
Audi S4 (B7) - 14/21
997S - 17/25
Audi A3 2.0T (same as my GTI) - 21/35
Infiniti FX45 - 12/18

As was mentioned above, I generally do use consistent throttle inputs, lift instead of the surge/brake thing, etc. The FX45 was frustrating because even on tiny throttle inputs, the instant MPG gauge just dove for the floor...

I didn't buy the 911 for gas mileage, but it is a nice benefit to have on a road trip. My A3 has been really surprising - it's very quick, but still turns remarkable MPG numbers. I like it so much I might get another one.

I was getting 22-24mpg highway and 19mpg mixed city/highway in my C2. Loved it.

I grew up in OC and have lived in SD for the last 12 yrs. When I head back to OC I can't believe the traffic these days it doesn't matter when you go day or night / weekday or weekend the 405 sucks *****. SD is getting bad too but definitely not as bad as LA/OC. In 10 years all SoCal freeways will be ill.

I drove from Atlanta to Nashville today. About 265 miles @ avg. speed of 70 mph = 24 mpg. Seemed a little low for the average speed (used cruise control a lot), but wtf do I care - its a 911.
