Video mount for 997
Video mount for 997
Hi,
I have an ioPort camera mount from my Boxster days, but I'm looking to mount it in my 997 Coupe for a DE event next Friday. I don't have a roll cage, is there any option that would work? I wouldn't mind doing something like what they do for Top Gear (look like little cameras suctioned to the windscreen).
Thanks for the help,
STSanford

I use this in my 997S. If you want to see your hands as well as the road ahead, you can get a good angle by mounting it in the rear window with a wide angle lens.

It comes with various attachments that allow you to stick the suction cups upside down or on a side window, etc. Here is a pic of it posted on my side window. Some clubs make you roll both windows down on the track though and I prefer to see the steering wheel as well.
Stickypods are complete crap, IMO. The hardware included is junk, and you're basically shelling out $250 bucks for a slab of aluminum with some holes milled in it, and a couple $1 industrial suction cups. They shake and jitter horribly with even extremely light cameras.
The Woods power grips are much better, effectively a pumped suction cup with a camera head attached to it. Cheaper and better than the Stickypods. They're $140 or so from McMaster-Carr (mcmaster.com, search for 'camera mount').

Okay, cool, thanks guys. I'm really interested in getting some sort of solution. I'm not crazy about the stickypod simply for the fact that if I mount it in the center of the back window, it's going to obstruct a lot of visibility. I'm actually thinking of modifying my existing IOPort mount by attaching it to some 2 X 4 material and then attaching that somehow to the LATCH teathers behind the rear seats.... Will let you know my progress...
not more than 5 minutes after I placed my McMaster-Carr order I found these for almost half the price:

Always possible to cancel the other order.
I have a solution. Will let you know tomorrow if it works well, but I took my ioPort apart and took out the subwoofer out. I next drilled a hole into the lip of the subwoofer slightly off to the passenger side so that I can bias the camera to show the steering wheel as well as the view out the windshield. I then took the bolt from the ioPort and threaded it through the hole and into the mount. Very slieck install I must say. When all is said and done, there's just a small hole to cover up.
