Question - Why is Turbo only ride faster with Tip?

Just curious if anyone can explain why the Turbo Porsche is faster with Tiptronic and all other models are not? Gearing? Turbos?

My best guess it has to do with the Turbo. Spool speed and maintaining boost during the shift is done better in the TIP.

This is a fair question to ask in the 997 forum, since it seeks info comparing the Tiptronic performance of non-TT cars with turbos.

It's also a good question. Quicker gear changing with the Tip and the resulting minimization of any drop-off in boost pressure in TT cars is a plausible answer for why the Tip's extra weight and longer gear ratios don't slow TTs down like they do in non-TT cars. Anyone actually know?

I thought it had to do with a launch mode, but no, I don't really know either

If i'm not wrong the tiptronic transmission for the Turbo is different to the regular 997 and 997s.

1. The tip can build boost prior to launch via torque braking
2. The tip holds boost consistently vs. drop off in boost when shifting gears

Ahhh....as a Tip owner I love this question....the anwser is because you can not shift a manual as fast as the Tip can shift. Plain and simple. Wait till PDK/DSG come out!

It must have to do with different transmissions. The tip is slower for the cayman, but faster for the turbo.

Also, if you look at BMW's...I believe some of theirs are faster in automatics.

You can make an auto faster than a manual...but often times this is not the case. It just comes down to how well the auto tranny is implemented I think.

Has little to do with shift speed in the case of the turbo performance difference. Its all in the launch and the ability to build boost from a dead stop where the stick cannot.

I can see that, but the difference for non-Turbos is approx .3 secs - .4 secs to 60 compared to 6 speeds. Yet the Turbo Tip is a complete 180 being .3 secs faster to 60 as a 6 sp.

So the tip able to shift more quick than a person shifting should not be a disadvantage on the strip; besides the weight. I am leaning towards the Tips able to use the Turbos boost more efficiently.

its the same reason why automatic turbo mustangs are so damn quick at the track.... building boost while stopped.... does anyone run antilag on their turbo porsche?

I noticed that the Turbo Tip also fells faster and more elastic than a 6sp. when staying in any one gear. That can only be explained with shorter gearing in the tip cars. And the gearing will explain the 0 - 60 advantage of the tip.
