997S and confusion
Boy am I a mess. Sold my 64 cab for more of an "everyday" Porsche to go along with my 73 911S coupe. Choices are many and include 993's of the wide body variety C2S and/or C4S. Looking for the lowest mile most pristine car I can find. Also drawn to the new cars, lovin' the drive quality and fit & finish of the 997S. They finally got it right after the 996 IMO.
Here is the current debate (all in my head, as the wife & kids don't quite get it)-- Black/black 06' 997S full leather, Sports chrono, bose +, Nav, plus a few other goodies. 3400 mile car, $77K. Or, a silver/black 97' 993 C4S, sport seats, well optioned but not loaded. 22,000 miles, mid $60K's.
I need intervention. I need a car. Share your wisdom, please.
PS I am actually enjoying the search, it's fun to mull it around

993. You're buying an all time classic. The last of the great 911's with an aircooled engine. It's better made and has far greater driving "purity" than the 996 or 997 (GT3's excepted). And financially the depreciation hit was 10 years ago.
I just went through the same dilemma - 993 or 997. I wound up with both
The 993 is a blast to drive and has its own charms - the sound and the look is classic. This '98 felt so refined (compared to my '91) that I lowered it with PSS9's and put on RSR mufflers. But, having both in the garage there's no question that the 997 is the more developed, powerful sports car. Porsche did a great job on this car. It can be as involving as the 993 on the track and then a luxurious ready-to-rock ride on the street.
If costs are not driving the decision (consider maintenance, warranty, parts costs and likely repairs down the road given your length of ownership) then I would go with the 997 and not look back (except over my shoulder whenever I saw a beautiful wide-body 993).
