Sharky Extreme

Sharky, wow! Embarrassed to say that i did not know that you were the same person who started SharkyExtreme.com; I have been reading and referencing your site for years. I've used your buying guides to build 3 PC's of my own, thank you for the great advice and suggestions. I just today came across your column in CPU and noticed a reference to "Sharkwerks" and low and behold.....

Thanks for your contributions both Porsche/Auto and PC.

Regards

hey oalvarez... man that brings back some memories and those were some fun days Seriously thanks so much for the kind words and I'm really glad you got some use/fun out of it. I started the site back in 1998 when I moved here and then we sold it in 2000. My clause was that I had to stay till 2001 so it was a fun ride. I still write about PC technology for www.cpumag.com although the shop is keeping me extra busy

Man it's like a late 90s early 2000 reunion here! I used to love writing/reviewing and entertaining you guys on all things PCs... Who'd have that we were geeks _and_ Porsche nuts at the same time?

What a small world eh Those really were some fun days. PC and 3D technology isn't quite as exciting to me these days. I just find the differences between ATI and Nvidia hardware to be so minute and harder to dissect (thanks to Microsoft setting the standards) that the need for my kind is gone

Haha that's too funny It's funny to think we all grew up together (or at least I think I did) and are now Porsche-nuts instead!

ATI, what's that? Did you mean AMD?

I dunno, I think with the DAAMIT mess, R600 lameness, DX10, Larrabee hype and Jen-Hsun dancing on Orton's corpse, things haven't been this exciting since NV30.

Sharky, if i may, are PC games going by the wayside? development sure seems to have slowed. I play less and less these days but have been contemplating building a new PC. I also toyed with the idea of going with a Mac Pro but you can't go SLI (i don't think).

How much would you personally spend building a machine these days? Are the Extreme setups necessary or is it more wise to blend a high-end build with some extreme parts?

thanks in advance!

I got into PC gaming with Falcon 3.0 on a 486/DX266 with 8 megs of ram...a machine that cost me $2k .

To think you can build a uber gaming system for around a g-note is amazing now...

Couldn't afford a pcar then...in fact I don't know if I still can but I got one..

Falcon was my first "legal" sim. I had MS FS but that was bootlegged.
I had a DX33 overclocked to 66, then later I was checking Sharkey's site for the best memory to oc, the best video cards and how could I make the AMD chip fater than Intel. (Too bad about AMD.)

The difference between men and little boys is the price of their toys.

Thanks again Sharkey, that was fun stuff. (And not so long ago.)

Hehe exactly... Seems so strange that ATI is now really AMD. Stranger still since they stole the show with the R300. Man they had everything and Nvidia's NV30 hair-dryer as competition. Amazing the turn-around. To be honest, I'm not suprised though. I know the guys at Nvidia really well and there is no other company like it in the graphics world. They are EXTREMELY aggressive and business-minded. They are no idiot-savaunts like 3Dfx were that's for sure. The thing is I just can't see Nvidia being toppled in any shape or form for the forseeable future. Nobody is left standing. Those stupid 6-month product cycles killed everyone. Not like we ever had a new Direct X or OpenGL every 6 months is it? Games still aren't even taking ful use of DX9 yet...
