Newbie - Buying a FGT

Hi guys,

I'm new here but I have been following this forum for awhile now.

Currently I'm looking at a '05 FGT with 800 miles. The car seems to be perfect except for one thing.... When I took out the car for a test drive, before the car fully warmed up, each time I would shift from 1st to 2nd gear, there seems to be a notch / grinding sound and sensation each time I enter the 2nd gear. However when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, the grinding sound and sensation doesn't come out. After awhile, when the car has fully warmed up, it became less and less until it was practically gone. The seller consulted his mechanic and the mechanic said this is something normal to some units....

Is this normal especially for a low mileage car?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to your inputs.

Godspeed!

This is normal especially when cold. Most owners install the oil cooler for the transmission (which was originally designed to be on the car from the factory but eliminated from production because of cost constraints)which eliminates the noise completely when warm.Be more cautious of any paintwork as many of these cars were wrecked and rebuilt.Joe

Thanks for the replies and pm's guys.... Just to be safe I will bring the car today to the dealer to do a 60 point check and in the same time ask a ford gt specialist about this tranny noise. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything is good with the unit.

The car is red and comes with all 4 options (white stripes, red calipers, macintosh stereo, bbs wheels). Car is stock and has about 850miles. Guy is asking $159k.

Sounds very nice. If I were buying another car today, a FGT would be top on the of my list. About the only thing I really dont like about these cars is the damn doors, I still dont know why they didn't fix that stupid design the second time around when they had the chance...

Best of luck man. I passed on a Red with white and all 4 options a couple years back. That same car would be worth more today. Congrats... it is an instant classic.

Yes. Mine does it to some degree until the transmission fluid has warmed up. Shifting slowly will help.

Good luck in your search.

Hey guys!

I finally took delivery of my FGT a few weeks back. Just like to say thanks for taking time to answer my questions which gave me comfort before writing a cheque.

Such an amazing car! Just like to share some pics I took while driving this beauty around SF just before I shipped it out. This car is definitely a show stopper! Wherever I parked it, people would go out of their way just to get their pictures taken beside it. Car is currently on it's way to it's new home here in the Philippines!

Cheers and Godspeed!

That's nice man! I have a modded '05 GTO. When the torque numbers climbed I invested in a stronger trans. The shifting from 1st to 2nd is very stiff for about the first 5 miles or so. My ZR1 is also notchy until the trans comes up to temp. They both have coolers, so it takes a few minutes. The 1-2 shift at WOT is the most stressful on the trans, so those parts are beefed up. Your car is beautiful. I love the FGT's lines. The interior is perfect. It's a GT 40 without the hassles. Good luck with it.

Congrats FLYING V !!!
You will love the car. 1-2 shift is normal, just do it real slow until the oil warms up. Clutch in, move to neutral, stop .02 secs, shift to 2nd.
I just installed the FRP exhaust and it sounds and looks beautiful. Doing the FRP pulley and tune very soon.
Enjoy !
