'68 GT500 How HOT is Too HOT? 220degrees?

Never had a car run sooo hot. 200 is o.k. 215 is on the warmer side right?

i have a GT500 w/ a 427, sometimes if i am in the city the water temp will run up as high as 230 degrees, at what point do i start to worry?

i can go on the freeway at 225 degrees and at an even 80mph the water tempreature will quickly decrease to 185-190.

Oil Pressure is Normal 50 or so

what suggestions do any of you have for me to begin running proper diagnostics on this if it's an issue?

THANKS

AL or cast iron motor?

230 is getting up there. Your radiator is too small from what I can see, get something much wider, triple pass, and run 2 very powerful fans on it. It shouldn't get much over the thermostat temp even in traffic.

50psi, I take it thats oil pressure?

that radiator is a nice looking piece but is way too small for that motor in traffic...can't really see the fan and shroud but they are probably as big as they can be for that radiator...if not try that...a 150 degree t-stat might help if you are running a 180...beautiful car...

This is the first time I've seen your car. And I have to say that is one GORGEOUS shelby!!! A true collector piece.

Cheers,

I would have to agree that your radiator is probably too small. I am running a set up from Ron Davis and it is much bigger radiator with dual fans. You may be able to switch to just a dual fan setup. Check with Unique and see what they say.

THANKS.. man all you guys have been very very helpfull.. it has a single fan right now, i'm sure i'll go dual then.

I put a 400 chevy motor in my 1950 Merc and we put some HUGE fans in that thing, it NEVER gets past 150 (knock on wood)

Should never get past thermostat temp if cooling is right.

get a bigger radiator, and possibly a lower temp thermostat. if you're still having trouble, try heat wrapping the exhaust headers.

A couple of suggestions. Everyone is right about the radiator being too small for a big block. I would also check to see how the radiator electric fan is setup. I suggest having the power wire from the fan run directly on the battery so it will run at its max power. Check to see what the temperature setting is on the thermostat. If your not running a/c put a pusher fan on the front of the radiator. I'm sure UP set the fan up correctly but it never hurts to check and make sure the fan is really pulling air instread of pushing. I've seen this happen before. Its not necessary to run dual fans, thats not always the best setup. We've run 1,000HP cars with single clutch fans with no problems.
