997 TT vs 996 Turbo S
997 TT vs 996 Turbo S
Folks-
I can't figure out how to change my signature line, so it is inaccurate.
As you may know, I am addicted to 911s (NA and Turbos), and just happened across a relatively cheap ($150K) 08GT3RS. I am also in the process of buying (hopefully) a 996 2005 Turbo S, because I really loved my 2002 996 TT with X50. I just sold a GT Silver 997 TT. (You can tell I am nuts).
SO, here is the fundamental question - is it worth the additional $25K buy yet another 997 Turbo? This won't even get the PCCBs which I consider a requirement, where the 996 Turbo S already has them. Also, every time Porsche releases a new model series (996, 997), the claims are that the new series is light years beyond the old one. IMHO, that is not always the case.
I am also looking at a 2007 GT3 with half cage - great car - but don't know how streetable it is. There is also an option of buying a 996 GT2 for the track.
So, is the 997 that much better a car than a 996 that it is worth the relatively high increase in price?
Thanks for letting me rave - Gerry

I owned many 996 generation cars, including 3 996 turbos; a turbo coupe, a turbo cab, and a turboS cab. IMHO, the 997 turbo is markedly better in virtually all aspects to the 996 turbo. It is faster, looks better, has variable suspension settings, not to mention gets better gas mileage, atleast when commuting. If money is not a big deal, then get the 997. Just my 2 cents worth...
You've owned them - you tell us.
I owned a 5 or 6 996TT's and I'm on my second 997TT. I think the difference is night and day and would have no interest in a 996tt anymore.

I havent owned a 997TT yet but really wated one so had good time in one, I would have to agree although for the money the 996TT is hard to beat!
evolution
cannot argue that every evolution of the turbo has brought marked improvements in performance and handling, same for the 997 version. All 911's are great! Price point shouldn't dictate your choice of what's on the menu, they're all tasty!

It's nice to be in this so long, every owner loves their version.....it's the only marque ever that will have that loyalty...we're all lucky that way. None of the other car owners can ever feel that way. When you see a 911, it doesn't matter what version, as long as it's nice...the rest of the car world....eat your single stage oil pump out!
i would get the 996 turbo s and just put about $5000-$6000 dollars in it for perfomance and boom you are faster than a 997 turbo and almost everthing out on the road and you will forget about the 997 turbo. i wanted a 997 to but it was cheaper to get the 996 turbo and hook it up.
I had all, but 997 tt tip 0-60 3.4 sec. 6speed 3.8 sec. stock one, if you upgrade tip one, you will fly...if you have tip, you don't need upgrade...
better than my Ferrari F430 F1, before I got this, I had Tech Art 997tt Tip, 997tt is fast & great for everyday drive...best of the best!!! very well made car !!!

Folks-
The reason I sold my 997 Turbo back to the dealer is that I do a large number of track events, as well as want to use one as a daily driver, and it was like driving a Cadillac or Mercedes, not a 911, at the track - even more so than any 996 that I have owned. I must admit that my GT Silver 997TT was my first Tip S, and although it was faster shifting than I could, it removed me even further from the road. I have found that previous generations of 911s were more connected. I regret now having turned down a 997 GT3 with Clubsport cage, but I have a wife and son, and he is tall, so somehow I would have to hook up a seat belt in back for him (like I did with my 2005 GT3).

Since you have owned both 996 tt and 997 tt, you probably are the best judge.
