Opinions on next Turbo

I know we are still a few years away but I was wondering if anyone has heard any rumors on the next Turbo or C2 models.

Is Porsche going to go from 6 to 8 cylinders?
How much more power will the next models have?
What could be improved?
When should the next generation debut?

Rumors, sure:

5-10% more power on the NA models
Direct injection
facelift (pics are out there) to include new LED tails and what looks to be a projector high beam vs. reflector on current models.

I'm no longer convinced that the 998 will be "more powerful" or "better performing" than the 997. I hope I am wrong. I hope I am very wrong.

In the last few weeks I have not had the time or energy to start a thread on 6speed in the efforts to discuss the latest stories out there in the automotive landscape concerning manufacturers "throwing in their hat" in the horsepower wars. Keep your eyes & ears open though...the eco-terrorists are everywhere, and unfortunately they are starting to win a little battle here & a little battle there - in their ultimate goal of making us all drive Priuses or taking the bus.

the green world program is growing, hopefully not too much in porsches back yard. I mean this in the sense of hp reduction, cleaner exhaust +1.
Future changes are just speculation at this point.

Sorry for the thread hijack Gary in BR. I would love for the 998 to have a mid-engine 5.0 liter Flat 8 TT with around 600hp and DSG, and ultimately an even better build quality than the 997. But who knows...

The Turbo is already one of the cleanest 'supercars' if you will so at least they are working with a proven engine. Now if they can reduce weight it would be a start but I too would not hope for more power, its just not in the cards.

From what I have read.Clean air and gas efficient car regulations are currently aimed at a car manufacturers overall production line. These regulations are requiring a percentage of all cars built by a manufacturer to be "green "cars". This allows companies who produce gas efficient cars to also produce less efficient sports cars. A weighted average or percentage of cars is allotted. This will allow the sports cars that we all love and own to continue for the immediate future. So some increased perormance is still possible for the near future.
As regulatory restrictions increase,the production numbers of sports cars may also decrease , with supply and demand resulting in higher prices. This most certainly will be combined with downsizing of engine sizes on exotics as well.

To me, it makes sense, to give the 997turbo, the engine upgrades that the GT2 has, and boost up the GT2 even more. And too, porsche could be even sweeter and provide a few more revs (+4-500) before the sorry rev-limiter kicks in.

I think if the past is a guide, Porsche will do as little as they think they can get away with. I mean that in the most complimentary way Except for the 993, which was a huge leap forward that greatly exceeded expectations and restored the brand, Porsche fully leverages their brand strength and Porsche "mystique" to set themselves apart from the competition so that they don't have to compete on a price basis or features/raw performance basis. WW has been an absolute genius at this, which is why Porsche is the most profitable car company in the world and WW has been compensated commensurately.

IMO, 911 needs to ditch the rear seats and adopt a mid-engine structure using V8 engine (similar to Audi R8, which won in every comparison between it and 911). They won't be able to get away with charging $100,000+ for a 6cylinder and rear-engine structure for much longer, especially now that they are at a dead-end when it comes to how much power they can make in N/A 6cylinder engines. Pretty much all of their competition is using V8's now and have 420hp+, so I'm definitely predicting the next 911 to be a major revolution and transform into a mid-engined V8 supercar. I wouldn't be surprised if Audi and Porsche come to an agreement to use R8's structure in the next 911's (like they do with Cayenne, Q7, Toureg)...

P.S. In addition, they can also introduce a coupe variant of the panamera structure.

The only problem with adopting a mid-engine car is that after so many years of the rear-engine 911 it would be a complete shift, I mean it really wouldnt even be a 998 (assuming it was released next) because it really wouldnt be a 911 anymore.

Of course it would be better performing, better handling, but it would be the end of an era for Porsche. Not that such a thing would necessarily be bad, but thats a huge decision to make.

In response to the talk about the auto indistry turning green:

At what point is this a bad thing? I understand the Turbo 911 is a sports car, but does it need more than 500hp? Hopefully new materials will help lower the weight, but I'm certainly happy about the prospect of increased mileage across the board for all types of new cars. Obviously thinking 'green' will not halt suspension advancements, so I still believe the next gen 911 will be faster than the last.

In fact I'm more concerned with what it will look like, since I find the 997s to be incredible attractive as they sit now.

Porsche with a Flat-8 TT......It will be pushing 800HP+ But its not gunna happen anytime soon.

The risk is that we go down a slippery slope in terms of being green. Who's to say that 500 hp is too much? What about 400 or 300 or even 200 hp? The speed limit in the US is about 65 mph...why do we even need cars that can go 180 mph? Why not just put a speed limiter in all vehicles at 70 mph?
