Wanted-Macbook Pro

Well, as of about 5 hours ago I am now laptopless. My Sony Vaio decided it wanted to slip into a coma and not wake up, so I am in need of a new computer for school(finals start next week and as of now I cannot get any of my data off my computer).

Talked with a computer expert friend, and he said to direct my attention towards Macbook Pro's, so that is what I am doing. Apple has the refurbs for around $1500, but I want to shop around and see if any 6speeders have any well taken care of examples they wish to unload.

Let me know Gentleman

Might be better off just buying a new white MacBook base model. Bought one two weeks ago for my daughter and it's really great. Like I mentioned, I doubt you need the MBP and it's bulkier as a laptop..Maybe you can get a bit of a student discount..Just get the base model and buy additional ram third part..SHould cost under $1100..

If you don't mind it, get a MacBook (base white version). They're the perfect laptop for a college student, IMO. Upgrade the RAM, and don't even worry about the Superdrive if you don't need to burn DVD's.

I bought a MB Pro, which I love, but it's because I wanted a larger display (15.4") and really like the case and look of the computer. I felt cramped using the MacBook, but it's all personal preference.

Make sure to get your student discount when you buy.

Yeah, I would suggest getting a macbook instead of a MBP unless you are going to be doing heavy video/photo editing. The only differences between the two are the video cards and bigger displays. The ram and processor speed are pretty much identical.

go on the apple site, find the link on the right hand side that says "education"...go to the education site and pick one up...u can get an additional $100 off MSRP through the education store..

but as everyone else here has stated...unless there are specific reasons why you need a MBPro (computer graphics/design nut), the regular macbook is gonna do everything you need and more...especially if its just for school and surfing the net...

and as someone else pointed out..make sure you upgrade the ram though..thats one upgrade you want to do..but DO NOT do it through apple...buy it third party and install it...much cheaper

Agree 100%. However, if I was looking at a black version, I might just sack up and get an MB Pro. The white model is a great deal, however. My friends and roommates have MacBook's (both black and white) and there really isn't much the MB Pro does better for daily college use. However, there are just "things" that I love about my MB Pro that justify the price for me: the display is bigger and nicer, case and aesthetics better (subjective), keyboard has back lighting (pretty trick), internal speakers substantially better, and the new ones have the multi-touch pad (however, it's only compatible with Safari, which is a terrible browser, so right when you download Firefox you loose it).

SOLD!

I appreciate all the advice guys. I'm on the Macbook hunt! I don't know that I would intend the laptop for media use, but if it could that would be a HUGE addition. I run a video production business, and being able to edit video at the races I attend, and being able to use Pshop without and hiccups would be another bonus. I couldn't even put CS3 on my Vaio without it nearly having a heart attack.

You should get the Pro. We have lots of people who do what you intend to do and I can tell you that the standard MB is not sufficient.

I used my roommates MacBook for a second today, and realized how great the layout of the MB Pro is. It just feels better and is so much easier for me to work on.

Don't get me wrong. My wife has a MacBook, and it's totally adequate for her needs. But if you're going to be doing any video rendering or Photoshop work, the MacBook won't cut it (so to speak). Also, if there's any chance you'll want to run BootCamp, Parallels, or VMWare, the Pro is the way to go.
