My tailpipe looked like this after a drive...
A friend of mine called me today for a late 4:00 PM drive through western washington. He brought his '06 E46 M3 and I brought my '08 Turbo.
We stopped about a half hour into it and I offered to switch cars to let him get some seat time in the TT. He's a very good driver and is a BMW addict with lots of years of experience.
After a brief instruction I told to be mindful of of the rpm's as speed builds quickly, and to try and keep the shifts at no more than 6k. I also asked him to be very deliberate when shifting from 4th to 5th gear so that he didnt accidently shift back to 3rd and Type 2 over-rev the car on me. My car has the factory SS and it seems very notchy when shifting from 4th to 5th.
We had a blast and hit some great raods for a couple of hours. Upon getting back to Issaquah he mentioned he may have bounced off the rev limited when he passed me in 3rd gear but he was not sure. Now I know the fuel supply is cut when you reach a certain rpm so there should not be a problem with this Type 1 rev. should there?
However, after getting back home I noticed some white coloring on the inside of each exhast tip and I have never have noticed the before and I have driven the car 6,000 miles. Is this anything to be concerned about? I was thinking it might be oil in the exhaust. The car seemed to drive just fine but again I've never seen this type of coloring.
All in all a great drive. Fo those who think the Turbo has a weak stock exhaust note, I beg to differ. I think it sounds absolutely amazing when the car is in front of you and the driver stomps on it. It also sounds like a freight train when it pulls past you WOT!
My friend was blown away by the seamless power delivery and overall feel of the 997 TT. The M3 is a great vehicle in its own right but the differnce between the two is light years in terms of acceleration.
Any feedback on the exhaust discharge would be much appreciated!
Thanks - Brad - Seattle, WA

I see this too.
That is what I see after a track day. There is soot from highway driving and it gets blown off. Also I get codes due the the aftermarket exhaust on slow driving and they go away on the track.
I've been told the same thing about the sound of the stock exhaust on the track from various people. Either from when they are following me or when I pass them, every time they say it sounds great.
I think there is a large difference in sound between street driving and WOT. And there is so much cabin noise and other stuff going on during WOT that you never really get an appreciation of the sound unless you happen to be outside the car.

after I read this "Upon getting back to Issaquah he mentioned he may have bounced off the rev limited when he passed me in 3rd gear but he was not sure. " This is the reason why no one drives my car. There's always that tendency to get a bit crazy cause you know it's not your car.
for those of you that mentioned "i don't let anyone drive my car"... wow its a car, a toy... and if your best friend wants to drive it, you are gonna turn him/her down? whats the point of having something thats so great and you are the only one who can enjoy it? and i love my cars as much as anyone of you if not more.
Greta - Will do! I need to hook up with you guys more often. I hear everyone saying "thats why I never let anyone drive my car"...I can see your point but I know my friends arent beating my car because its not theirs.
If anything they're probably more careful and thankful for the trust I put in them. I've driven my frineds F430 and the last thing I was thinking was how bad can I stomp on it....I just wanted to get the drive over with and avoid some idiot rolling into me!
At any rate I love this car! I've had it six months and have averaged a 1,000 miles a month just driving it on weekends. I know I'll pay the price down the road on mileage! This is is my 4th Porsche (2nd Turbo) and I put on about 9,000 miles a year. P's are meant to be driven! Brad
