With a only a few months until my new car arrives, I can sense my dad salivating over the idea of driving my car when I'm out of town. Despite being 76, he's very active and dates much younger women, and I can see him wanting to use my car to impress them. He lives in Texas, but comes to Florida to visit once a month or so, and I'm not always in town when he's here.

To make things worse, he has a bad habit of thinking that everyone is trying to race him. He keeps a CTS-V down here, and pretty much every time I go out with him in it he gets into at least one street race. The last time, he jumped a curb and blew out a tire in the process. Luckily he prefers his Caddy to my convertible so I dont have much of a problem with him driving my car now, but I can see it being an issue when I get the new one.

And then there's his OCD tendencies. He washes my current car every other day even when I ask him not to, and leaves air fresheners in the interior and trunk, towels on the mats, and breath spray and tooth picks in every nook inside the car. No exaggeration.

How does one tell a parent that they're not allowed to drive (or touch) your car??

 

my dad gets driven in his escalade around by his driver... so nah am not worried...
oh and he does take my Range Rover when he goes to provinces...
but when it comes to a porsche, though am not an owner YET. i'll sleep in front of it if i have to...

 

Insurance - That is the key for me. If he comes over and wants to drive the TT or 355. I just say - sorry, I changed the insurance to a specialist company and now only I can drive it

 

Thats funny, both my parents (ML63 and E63) tend to think everyones trying to race them 'off the line' also and drive as such. No turbo keys for them. Neither has driven a stick in 25+ years though.

 

A 76 year old who street races at least once every time he goes out? Haven't heard that, yet. No offense, mate.

I'd let my dad drive my car, and if he wants to wash it for me and keep it shiny, I'm not going to argue with that!

 

Yeah, that's new one. I wonder what the 16 year old kids think when they look over and see someone their grandfather's age intent on racing. He should be more careful though...there seem to be enough kids closer to my age doing dumb crap on the road nowadays. We don't need the elderly starting to get all fast and furious as well

 

My dad got into an accident about a year ago and since then has been scared of going fast. I let him drive my 928 jsut cause I know he won't go over 40mph lol. He used to drive the 930 a bit fast tho. Temporary condition maybe..

 

If dad wants to drive the car he can and all of you should feel the same way. However, I did let my uncle drive my car and instead of switching from 4th to 5th he switched it to third. Thank god he did not blow the engine.

 

Last week I was driving to the mall in the 997TT. I stopped at a red light and I look over to see a very nice Cayman S. The driver was a mid 60's early 70's woman driving. She looks at me and complements me on the Turbo. Im like thank you very much. Then it get interesting...She asks me if I wanna go toe-2-toe. Im like are you kidding me you 70 yrs old....LOL light turn green and she hammers it! Im like WTF I cant believe this is happening, so I had to open up the Turbo a little bit. Just amazed on the elderly drivers...some can really drive

 

are you serious? without your dad there wouldn't be you nor your fancy cars. i'd be embarrassed if i knew someone like you

 

My dad drives like you expect a 80 year old (He's 50) to drive, so I'm not worried. however, my mothers nick name was Parnelli Jones...

 

Yeah my dad can definitely drive, but he always thinks that everyone wants to race him so it's a daily occurrence.

Twenty or so years ago when he was driving me to school in his 930 turbo or one of the other cars, he would get into races against some of the older students who were trying to get past him or beat him to a turn.

Before that when he was in residency he was a Florida state drag racing champ in his 300SL. It's just in his blood.

There are definitely some older drivers out there that will try to give you a run...sometimes I'm not sure if the kids or the older drivers are worse.
