WTB: Canon 40d AF Lenses, need a wide angle!
WTB: Canon 40d AF Lenses, need a wide angle!
I'm using a Canon AF 28-135mm lense right now and it just doesn't give me enough of a wide angle shot. I always have to back up to shoot....
Looking for Canon quality lenses so let me know what you have!
thanks

I'm looking for something that can be a good "all purpose" lense. I just find my current one is a bit too narrow. Not too well versed in camera lense lingo so not even sure what I need really. Going to pay a visit to that camera shop on Winchester/Hamilton to ask for some advice.
What do you use that lense for primarily?

So the lens I have is not necessarily an all around lens. It is a wide angle (which is what I thought you wanted). It excels for close up shots. Its really good at car shows and stuff where you don't have a lot of room to work with so you can get right up next to the car and still get the entire car in the frame. It's part of Canon's L series so the glass is much higher quality than the standard $2-400 dollar lens. I like the lens a lot but I may be upgrading before I go to europe w/ my family so let me know! Try it out at San Jose Camera (tell them 17-40 L)

thanks that sounds like something I need! Will check it out and let you know - how much you want for it?

The Canon 40D has a crop factor of 1.6. So take that to your 28mm end and 28 x 1.6 = 44mm.
The Kit IS lens is not a bad lens 18-55 which would give you a nice wide angle equal to the 17-40mm "L". The 17-40mm obviously would be the better choice. The F2.8 is a nice lens as well but a little pricey if you are still starting out to understand camera lingo.
The 17-40mm is a very good lens for the money. They hold their money well at the price point that osj911 is selling it at. Most used ones are running at $599.00 and new ones are about $690.00
If you are looking for a very sharp wide angle for the 40D also look for at the 10-22mm. It is tack sharp.

thanks guys for the wealth of info - yes I'm still learning camera lingo but I want to only have one more lense to carry around so let me think a bit and let you know.
Right now it looks like either the 17-40 L lense or the 24-105 F/4 IS L lense that another member is selling but that one is like $900'ish
(I'm trying to just buy one good lense and be done so I can learn to shoot more)

S4play. I also have a 40D. 24-105L will not give you much wide angle as the 17-40L. I recently purchased 17-40L as my all around lense. I enjoy it very much.
Currently, I have 17-40L, 50 1.4 and will soon be purchasing 70-200 f2.8 non IS.
that seem to be the complete "kit" as people get. but it is all depends on what type of style you shoot.

I use the 24-105L for my 5D. I use the 17-40L for my 40D.
The 50mm 1.4 is a great lens for under $350.00.
Butterdog - PM if you are interested in my 70-200 F/2.8(Hardly used) as I purchase an IS version. The one I am thinking of selling is a non-IS version. I can cut you a deal.

thanks for the wealth of info! I'm headed to my local dealer to try the 17-40mm lense since that seems to be the one I need and my price range too. I'll make a decision once I test it out!
What does the 70-200 F/2.8 lense cost normally - what does it do and is that a costly lense?
happy 4th!
rick
It all depends what you like to shoot. I shoot landscape and what not, so 17-40L with F4 is good since I usually dont shoot in low light or indoor.
I shoot alot with my 50mm 1.4 now, the sharpeness is addicting. =)
70-200 f2.8 is around 1100. if you want the IS version is around 1700 bucks.
It is consider a great telephoto lense. You also have the F4 version.
