Steering wheel cover in leather...
A suprisingly difficult PITA. Upper cover is very easy - T10 Torx driver, two screws at the bottom, and the top cover pivots up. For bluetooth users, you can easily install a mic in here.
Once the top unit is up, detach clips holding the vinyl covering, detach the microphone and it comes off.
The bottom is a royal PITA. One T10 Torx screw and one plastic clip - ended up destroying the clip to get the lower cover off.
Anyways - here it is...

You don't need to remove the bottom to flip the top up...it's a clam shell design. If I remember correctly, there are just two screws toward the front of the housing that need to be done. The clam shell will open up. It is hinged toward the back. The bottom doesn't need to be disconnected to access the innards of the top half.

So, would a spherical-type mic not fit?
Like the BT1500? I think it should fit as there is a fair amount of space, but you may need to tape it in place as the OEM mic clips into the plastic holder.
Before you thread the wiring behind the dash and button everything up, try making a call from that position first. Some folks have complained of poor audio in the OEM position.

And 'splicing'?? "Dammit, Jim. I'm a doctor, not an electrician!"
Did you go with the SIM card option on PCM? If not, you may not have a mic in there.

I'm the 2nd owner. Slot is there, but 99% sure it is not functional.
