"Stock ECU" - Fabspeed Exhaust/Headers Compatibility
Strange thing going on here.
2008 997tt with Fabspeed quiet version exhaust and "ImagineAuto" specially designed headers.
- a few hundred miles, Check Engine Light (CEL) goes ON.
- about a thousand miles of driving, the CEL light goes OFF.
2009 997tt with the exact exhaust and headers (did a change out).
- same thing happens, a few hundred miles, CEL light goes ON.
- informed by my dealer the "sensors" are more sensitive in the 2009 models. He calls Fabspeed and finds out that I need new Cats (1500 for the cats and 400 for the installation).
- I drive the car for about a thousand miles and voila!! the CEL lights go OFF.
Not sure what is going on here. I am just concerned that the CEL light going OFF may not be a good thing.
Any ideas? Car runs fine...

I have had my Fabspeed "Quiet" version on my '08 TT for about 1 year and approx. 3,000 miles with no problems. I think I read somewhere that someone had a problem with a header leak causing a problem. But since it happened on both cars I don't know. As far as the sensitivity difference, the only thing I ever heard was there was an increase between the '07 and '08. Have you called the guys at Fabspeed? They are very customer service oriented. I have read where they have replaced cats for no charge. Give them a call yourself and see what they say.

Chris, when were your cats replaced? I know they had a pair of bad runs (as has many other exhaust manufacturers) Whenever Porsche comes out with new technology, or in this case, more strict tolerances, unfortunately we in the aftermarket world bear the blow in the form of adapting to their standards. From what I understand their newest cats have completely solved the issue and their customer service has always been outstanding. Might be worth a phone call to them to see what help they can offer. Good luck guys.
If the car is running fine don't sweat it, one way to check is to hook up a code reader to your obdt2 port and see if there are any impending codes. Sears has a decent one about 75$.
If you continue to get fail codes you need a new set of cats. I had the quiets on my car at one time with no cels.
Chris, the bung extensions might work, pep boys has them dirt cheap, it's an easy diy, or I can help you one afternoon.

Thanks for the offer - no way I would tackle this. i'm lucky I can add oil without making a mess.

The advice about getting a code reader/clearer is good. I had the same issue as you and needed to keep track of the codes to "discover"the solution (sometimes a bit of detective work). At first it seemed to be O2 sensors but with bung extensions and a few more clearing of the codes the CEL disappeared not to return. No worries, it happens and you can resolve this since you are dealing with a good after service company (a must!). Maybe check and clean the MAF.
Good luck, I know it can be a bit frustrating until you resolve it.
