There now is a substitute
while porsche was too busy fixing it's financial problems, Ferrari has just released some pix and write-up on it's BRAND NEW 458 "italia".

AMAZING!!!!!
ferrari uses the latest DFI, double-clutch, E-DIF, lightest materials; technology available. They have taken the "GLOVES" off and will leave everyone behind. faster than the scuderia & ENZO!!!!
this will definitely keep lambo and esp. porsche R&D up late @ night. i hope VW is listening
sorry to say (cause i have loved porsches since i was a kid):

458 sounds like a true nowdays supercar..I don't even think a PDK 997tt could over-performe it..Ferrari always do that,like the F430 which released in 2005 before the 997tt arrive.996tt just can't compare with it..
Ferrari is in a different league of its own. Ferrari is supercar territory. Porsche carries all lines of vehicles, from the base model Cayennes, Boxsters, and Caymans to the exotic Carrera GT. Although Porsche does have supercars such as the Carrera GT and GT2, for the money I'd probably go with the Ferrari. It just outperforms the Porsche in many ways including its latest technological advances. But for a true everyday sports car, the TT, GT3, and Carrera line will do just fine. In that sense...there is no substitute.
Since the F458 has 570 horses, it would be faster. Let Porsche release 570 horses in the current GT2. see what happens.
I don't know about you guys but I hate the way that Ferrari looks.

With 997TT stock torque of 505lb-ft @ 2100-4000rpm and a potential of 700lb-ft & 700HP with only $20K mods. Compared to F458 torque of 398lb-ft @ 6000rpm and limited mods potential at any cost. There is NO substitute. Not to mention double in price and 1-2 years waiting list for F458.
I think that the new Ferrari 458 Italia is a beautiful design - something that German car companies can't seem to accomplish, except maybe with the Carrera GT (look at the ugly Audi R8 IMHO compared to its Lambo cousins). It is supposed to be more reliable than previous models, but is not that usable as a daily driver. And I bet the maintenance costs are high - except that both Ferrari and Lamborghini service costs have dropped over the past few years.
My problem is the price - I suspect from everything I have heard it is in the range of $250K+ (USD) for a base model, and they will probably will not be easy cars to obtain, unless you have a long-standing relationship with your Ferrari dealer. Those "letters of intent" that Ferrari requires are frequently not honored, so you can be put on a list, pay a deposit, wait forever and never get a car.
What is that quote (and who said it?) - Buy a car designed by Italians, engineered by Germans, tested by the British - but I can't remember what the Americans were supposed to do - maybe manufacture it? But that doesn't make sense anymore.

The 458 looks like a kit car at first. But after you walk around it a few times it looks very sexy. The interior is stunning from my prespective. At the end of the day I will stick with Porsche because in my 7 years of ownership it has only been in the shop for routine maintenance. I could not say that about my 355 F1.
Still no substitute for me.

If I wanted to drop at least $250K and stew for >1 year, I'd be all over it. After taking delivery, I'd promptly garage it, and make sure to put no more than 1,500 miles/year on it before I'd sell it in 3 years for a $100K loss.
But in some seriousness, yeah, the car rocks.

The 2009 F430's are still near the 300k range. The Scuderia is in the 350k range.
You will have to wait and pay more like 350k+ to get a 458.
Your prices are optimistic. New Scuderias can be bought under list.
