How About GT2 Turbos on 997tt?

Anyone have any experience using stock GT2 turbos on the 997tt? I am interested because it's a Porsche part and I may be able to maintain the warranty while getting more hp.

Does the GT2 turbo bolt right on?
Can I expect a significant increase?
Any downside to going this route compared to other options?

Thanks for any input.

TPC has done this swap. A little pricey, as the GT2 turbos are larger than the stock turbos, at a premium of over $7-9K.

If you want to go powerhappy, you can get GT2 turbos with modified wheels... 700+ whp

My 01 Gemballa had GT2 turbos and it was amazing. It was a 996 but one hell of a car. Amazing that back in 02 it was prob just as fast as my stage 1 997 now. Amazing.

this is right now the only interest in getting GT2 turbos cause the stock ones are out performed by the modified tt turbos, and you may forget the warranty question even with stock gt2 turbos since the ecu is modified to suit them.

Even the latest Champion billet turbos would be quite a bit cheaper than the stock GT2 turbos. I don't know how they compare in terms of power delivery but I believe the Champion ones would be more powerful.

How about stock vs stock? My dealer is OK with modified DME and lots of other bolt ons not effecting warranty. I haven't asked them specifically about GT2 turbos yet but so far they have told me that swapping the stock throttle body for a larger one was OK because it would still be a Porsche part.

I know there may be better solutions but they also would DEFINITELY void the warranty.

9k + 3k to modified them and you spend some $$ for the IC and exhaust and intake the total will be close to 3071 kit from protomotive.

Keep in mind that in order to run the OEM GT2 turbos you may also need software. Once a dealer sees the GT2 turbos on the car, that might just put a red flag on any warranty claims since they'll know there had to be ECU modifications done as well. Unless there's a gray area when it come to the GT2 Turbos since they're OEM, but to be honest I'm not sure.

I'm sure you've seen plenty of information on our new billet turbos. I guarantee you'd be happy with them.

You'll definately need reprogramming - non swap in a turbo will run properly unless the computer is told what to do.

If warranty is an issue, you should just bow out of modifying your turbos. You can't hide a turbo swap, even the wheels, because the ECU programming is going to change.

Not worth it in my humble opinion. Way more cost effective to go the modded VTG setup.

bob, when are you ready for those intercoolers. Installed 3 sets this week.

It's true...BUT...you could take the 5k you save on the modded 997 vtgs over the GT2 turbos and put it in a GIC, or in the bank or something and when you need non-warranty engine work you have 5k available! If you have a repair requiring more than 5k well good luck!

I think the key thing is to carefully plan your upgrades. It's always best to determine your power goal first, and then do your upgrades in stages so they all work towards that goal. Another important thing is to do your research. Make the calls, talk to the tuners (that's why we're here ), and get comfortable with the entire process before you move forward.

Besides us here at Champion, there are several other tuners who are capable of providing reliable high horsepower kits for the 997 turbo. Stick with a proven formula, and chances are you won't really have to worry about warranty issues.

Oh I'm sure the kits sold by the vendors here are "reliable" but it doesn't mean that **** doesn't happen and then cost money when you do things to void the warranty. My point was that the GT2 turbos wouldn't be a sensible purchase even if the warranty was kept intact, but that's not the case anyway.
