Help with hundreds of rock chips
Help with hundreds of rock chips
Hey guys-any ideas for help with rock chips on the extremely soft Lexus paint. It has only 32k on it now and it literally has hundreds of rock chips.
I had heard of Dr Colorchip, anyone tried it?
Did not want to have to do a full respray, but if I do I will get the same clear film put on that I did on my Aston.
The Lexus paint is garbage!
Thanks!

would like to see pics of this... you should put clear plastic wrap like what you have on your aston...i went to dealership and bought touch up paint for my white RX with clear boat but i think i didnt do a good job on it.
Thanks Adam, I would cover it with clear wrap-but only after a respray which I am trying to avoid.
I will take pictures when the wife returns home.
Did you notice many premature rock chips in the paint on your Lexuses? I have owned many cars but this is the first Lexus and its terrible!!
Yeah, the concern with the respray was not so much cost as it was if I sell it people will always question if its been in an accident......and will the blend really look 100% right on or be slightly off!
I ordered the colorchip and will try it upon arrival.

Rock chips are a known problem... You'll really need a respray. This Lexus paint looks very good but chips easily.

Just have it properly documented so that you have a record of why it was resprayed. Having parts of the car repainted is always a concern of "why" was it repainted. Touching up over existing rock chips may not look good especially if it is peppered in the front.

I will take before and after pics and post to the site. The car is smoky granite mica (darker grey metallic).
Have spent 3 hours on the car and am 95% done. Taking a break for football and letting the front bumber dry. I have literally touched up the entire car so far and removed all paint with the exception of the road rash on the lower bumper.
Initial thoughts are that it should be called Dr. Colorroadrash as it removes road rash 100%! It is incredible. Rock chips through primer that are the size of a pencil eraser simply are colored in but not really filled in. Concern here is that wax will build up and expose chip again.
The color is spot in and it blends perfect. From 1-2 steps back the car looks brand new. Well worth the time/effort and minimal money. I am **** retentive and I would say on a scale of 1-10 its a solid 8.5.
I will post pictures before/after later....but even those do not do it justice.
The results are so good that I will be ordering it for my Aston Martin, and my neighbor is getting it for his black XKR.

The kit came with the paint (smoky granite mica), paint blending liquid, 3 brushes, a glove to smear the paint with and a microfiber cloth to do a final wipe with after blending the paint.
Here are some of the pictures with severe road rash evident and hundreds of rock chips.

I cleaned the car with Chemical Guys Citrus wash and shine to remove wax and clean the paint so that the new paint would hopefully stick better. I then shook the new paint container untill mixed.
I started with 12in X 12in spots and dabbed each rock chip and immediatly wiped with my finger accross the blob of paint to make it flat (with the provided rubber gloves on. In the areas of sever road rash (bumper and side of grill) I follow the instructions and poured the paint onto an old tee shirt and wiped across the panel. Here are some pictures with the paint on after being wiped across flat. It looks like I am ruining the car at this point!
