Proper size 20" tires on 2006 S65 AMG?
Hello everyone,
We have an 2006 S65 (the older shape), and we had 20" Lorinser rims that I after a while (and a couple of pot holes) they started shaking over 60mph.
Besides the shaking when going over lets say a bump or something that compresses the rear suspension by more than a little bit, the rear tires are rubbing. I don't know if it's the inside potion of the tire or the upper portion but it's rubbing. They are Pirelli PZero Nero (275/30-R20)
I just purchased new 20" rims and of course it's the same size so nothing has changed. I am just wondering, since the original were 19" rims and I saw on tire-rack there are optional sizes for 20" that are even wider (rear 285/30-R20) that what's installed now. Anyone had a similar problem? How come the rear tires are rubbing if it's factory optional sizes?
Thank you

Because there's next to ZERO room in the back wheel well on that car to play. It's quite remarkable how MB shoehorned the wheel in there to clear the brakes, miss the suspension, and not rub the fender liner. An OE 275/35 19 is 26.5" tall. A 285/30 20 is the correct rear in order to maintain the correct OD and have the load capacity to safely support the weight of the car. And it's 26.7" on average. Proper wheel width and offset are critical for this car, and there is next to no wiggle room to make anything else fit. If the wheels are right, 285 should be OK.

Will a 285 wide rear tire like listed as a recommended size on your web-site have a smaller diameter and will not rub?
I will be buying new rear tires and I wanted to know if I can resolve this issue before ordering the same tires and size.
Every time I hear the fire-spitting growl of the bi-turbo 612HP V12, and just admiring how well the car is made is remarkable every single time. It's an incredible car, shows that someone in MB still has some craziness in him.
Thank you. What I don't understand is that if I have the correct size, even 10 less in width, how come they are still rubbing against something under load?

Again, this car is a SHOEHORN fit. One of the tightest fits I have ever seen as a matter of fact. Varying from your stock setup in any way could cause rubbing on this car.

I put 305/35/19 on the rear MPS2, just to see if they'd fit as I had them left over from my '07GT3.
They fit, but there was a very light rub on the right inside tire only after big bumps.
I used them up (Happens quickly in CL65) and went back to OEM size PS2.

Well the 20inch rims I installed don't fit, the rub too much.
The weird thing is that they rub the wheel arch, not the inside! I guess they have a different offset? The tires are the same size but they are just in line with the wheel arches (more to the side vs. stock rims).
What rims options can I have? I am going to buy 19inch rims instead. The 20's just don't fit good.
What offset should I get so the wheels are snug in the wheel arches? What is the stock offset of the rims on the W220 S65 AMG?
Thanks

Im starting to give up. After ordering a set of 20" and understanding that i got
a set for the newer s class shape (w221) so they are too wide and they rubb the fenders, again. Now i went to a wheel shop and they told me a set of Vossen rims will fit, i ordered them, they installed it and it stuck out of the fender even worst! I had to pay a fee and return them.
Can anybody PLEASE help me find rims for my 2006 s66 AMG w220? I dont even mind going back to the stock 19" i just want it to stop rubbing. I would buy a set from mercedes, but a set of the stock rims are $8500!!! Without tax!
Problem is i cant even find rims on Tirerack, there isnt even one option available. Does anybody know if the rims available for the same year s55 will fit the s65? Because there are plenty availablefor the w220 s55 AMG on Tirerack.

Any of the wheel vendors on here should be able to find you something in the correct offsets that will work. The other option is to keep the wheels you have but have the fenders rolled a little so that the wheels will fit. The wheels I used to have on my viper rubbed a little only during braking while going in reverse, I just learned to live with it. Don't trust what will fit on the S55. Have you been on the mercedes forums? You'll find out better info and offsets there i'm sure.

The problem is no one has experience with this car, especially the 2006 S65 AMG because it's the older body (W220), so the guy in the wheel shop working on exotic cars told me it will fit confidently, but it really, really did not.
Actually the front rims fit (9 inch wide, and the lowest offset available from Vossen CV1), but the rear rims he tried to fit, at 10.5 inch wide and concaved (even with the lowest offset) were sticking almost an inch out of the rear fender! I think it's that rim the spokes are not flat but the are going outward, maybe that helps clear the huge brakes but the rim itself is really going to touch the fender no matter how much you roll it.
