Porsche to offer lightweight 20" wheel option

We have it on VERY good authority (please don't ask, I can't tell you) that Porsche will soon announce a lightweight 20 inch wheel option for certain models. I know this will be sacrilege for some, but it is true.
There are a number of technical reasons to support this decision, such as increased brake diameter and improved steering response. However, I suspect this is just another step up the marketing ladder by a highly competitive company.
Naysayers will likely bring up issues like ride quality, unsprung weight, etc.
However, one has only to look at the performance of the mighty Nissan GT-R to see what can be done with 20 inch wheels and tires.
I'm old enough to remember the brouhaha when 19s were first announced. And 18s.
Progress or sacrilege, it's gonna happen.

What does Porsche mean by lightweight? I hope not 28lbs, like the GT3.

And I can remember back when 14's were standard and 15's were for special cars.

Let's see what Porsche comes up with.

Lol I remember my 5.0 302 (errr 4.9) Mustang with 15" wheels...good ole days.
225 stock horse power might has well been 1001. LOL

Today an Altima seems faster.

Interested to see what they come up with, and what Porsche's idea of 'lightweight' means...

Dr. Volk,
Thanks for the kind words.

Actually, I would expect something in the mid 20 lb range.
The 20x9.5 and 20x10.5 GT-R wheels weigh about 26 lbs. Porsches are lighter so the mass of the wheel can be less.
The OEs will not spend the money required to make a really super-lightweight forged wheel. They correctly assume that the consumer will buy the car anyway, light wheels or not.
